Seattle suspends cop, but not Bloomington?

By:  Diane Benjamin

Sgt. Shumaker got punished with a piece of paper for making a racist remark.  That severe penalty is probably still hurting.  Sure.

One media report says it can disappear if he stays clean for 5 years.  Wow, so much for that permanent record stuff.  He doesn’t lose anything of value except, now that it’s public, his honor.

Why exactly didn’t the City get the charges dropped against Gabriella Calhoun?  Did they really think she would be found guilty with a cop making racist remarks at the scene?  Renner, Hales, and Shumaker could have buried the entire affair, maybe this is Culture Change!

While surfing the net I found a very similar story from Seattle:

While Pursuing Black Suspect, White Officer Uses a Term That Gets Her Suspended Without Pay — but It’s Probably Not What You’re Thinking

A white Seattle police officer was suspended without pay for 15 days for using what the department determined to be a racial slur during her pursuit of a black domestic violence suspect in October 2013.

Police dash cam video captured Seattle police officer Jennifer Hunt chasing the suspect through downtown Seattle and then yelling at the 32-year-old man, “You’re gonna get your ass shot, boy!”

Let me see if I have this straight,

  • Bloomington officer punished with a piece of paper in his file
  • Hales upset it happened
  • Renner didn’t know until 6 days ago
  • Renner upset too
  • Renner thinks the Council should review policies (even though they don’t make policies)
  • Punishment is considered severe by Hales and new Police Chief
  • City oblivious to the tape showing up in court
  • Public not convinced justice was served against officer
  • Public loses confidence in City Government and Police Department
  • Seattle Officer in similar situation gets 15 days off with no pay

Since Bloomington now likes citizen surveys for everything, what do you think:
