Halbleib named voice of Rivermen

PEORIA — Central Illinois broadcast veteran Greg Halbleib will become the new play-by-play voice for the Peoria Rivermen, beginning with the season opener at Carver Arena on Oct. 24, the team announced recently.
The McNabb native launched his radio career for WZOE radio in Princeton. He has spent 35 years in the radio business, most recently in Bloomington-Normal.
“I have followed the Rivermen almost since day one, so I am very aware of Peoria’s hockey history,” Halbleib said. “It’s exciting to realize I get to be a part of the next chapter. Being here last year as part of a visiting team, I saw what a super job Bart Rogers and everyone here has been doing to continue the Rivermen tradition of providing a great experience on and off the ice.
“I am not exaggerating when I say I am thrilled to be in Peoria.”
Rivermen co-owner Bart Rogers said they are thrilled to have Greg join their team.
“His resume speaks for itself and his 30-plus years of experience means Rivermen fans will be in great hands this season. Plus, it’s very important that we continue to have a broadcaster who is well-versed in Peoria’s rich hockey history and tradition,’ Rogers said.
Glad the full time GM of the Coliseum is enjoying success with his hockey team in Peoria.
Bloomington is blessed to have someone so multi faceted to get paid full time in Bloomington plus be willing to run a professional hockey team in Peoria.
Being a GM of an arena and hockey team must not allow Mr. Rogers time to do anything else?

Diane: What is owed on the coliseum? If we stripped the building and sold off everything inside then dumped it do you think we could take what would be losses to pay of the debt each year without incurring more losses as we then wouldn’t have maintenance expenses etc. Thanks for any info
The raised the Sales tax to pay the bonds. If they leave it until paid off it wouldn’t cost near as much as it is now. The Pepsi Ice Center makes money, not enough to pay for the building – but at least it shows a profit. They do rent ice from the Coliseum when kids are playing in leagues. Not sure how that would be handled since the ice is expensive. All the equipment is coming up on 10 years old. Not sure what they could sell for much. I would find professional management before looking at selling it off. There is MUCH better than CIAM out there. Do a contract that gives incentives for success instead of subsidizing failure.
I don’t know what the balance is, they keep refinancing. I may have something, I will look.
Found it – the 4/30/14 Financial statements say the City owes approx $31.5 million.
31.5 million, geez..I guess it would take a lot of sales to make up that amount..I was thinking of selling each chair with a plaque “Bloomington’s Boondoggle”
They will be losing naming rights soon too. That’s $1 Mil a year. Maybe we could rename it that!
