Yes, Virginia -Santa brought City employees all day the 23rd off AND all day the 26th off.

How many paid days off did you get?

Even the Post Office only got Monday!

Add that to the gold-played insurance, pension, and sick leave buy back.

You work to pay government employees – they don’t work for you.

Think local elections don’t matter?  These guys will be voting – and voting for whoever keeps their benefits intact.

Maybe you should vote the opposite.

  1. My employer is only providing 12/26 and 01/02 off.

    I remember when I worked at ISU for a year like this we would have had all this week off and return on 01/03. Salary employee were paid. I don’t know about hourly employees. It was like getting over a week more of vacation every year.

  2. Umm…post script. A good day to FOIA records. Certainly, there should be none due to no ‘business’ conducted.

  3. I know a lot of people who get the week off between the Christmas and New Years holiday – ISU, large accounting firms, local companies. It’s great they get that perk; however, they need to remember that perk when they complain the other 11 months of the year about getting less vacation time. Instead of getting 4 weeks of vacation, you are probably “only” going to get 3 weeks paid vacation plus this period.

    That being said, there is no reason for the city to be giving off two days for Christmas and a day and a half for New Years unless that is being countered by less vacation days for the employees. Perhaps they could use this time to complete their regular business tasks such as composing financial statements that are long overdue, fixing roads, etc.

    You’re right, these holidays are another item on the list of gold-plated benefits the City of Bloomington workers have. I have a feeling you’ll still have a line of applicants a mile long for jobs even if you take away the ability to spike pensions and Cadillac health care. There are a ton of people out there who would take their place for a good salary/hourly wage, plus benefits (healthcare, defined contribution retirement, paid vacation).
