Here: Call Police, elsewhere . . .

By: Diane Benjamin

When the Edgar County Watchdogs told the Bloomington Election Commission their meeting was illegal BEFORE the meeting started, they started the meeting anyway.

Then, when Kirk Allen, John Kraft, and I interrupted the meeting because it was illegal – they called the police!

Relive great moments in Bloomington history by watching the short video HERE

Recently the Watchdogs, on their way to another meeting, stopped by the Shelbyville Township Electoral Board meeting.

Here’s what happened:

On our arrival, we noticed there was neither a Notice nor an Agenda posted as required under Section 2.02 of the Illinois Open Meetings Act.

Once the meeting was called to order, we informed the board of their failure to place the Notice and Agenda for public viewing 48 hours prior to the meeting.

On being notified of the alleged violations of the OMA, they did the right thing and canceled the meeting.

No police.

No accusations of being “unruly”

They followed the law.

Novel idea!

The Watchdogs were on their way the Chatham because the mayor had been filmed making an obscene gesture to a citizen.  He got censured – just like Tari Renner did.  In other words, it was mostly immaterial.

At least Renner had the guts to show up, the Chatham mayor didn’t.  Read that story HERE

  1. Interesting video – they don’t want to follow the law or listen to anyone – it’s their party and the citizens are not invited. Just shut up and sit down… you don’t have permission or a right to challenge anything we do… I’m sorry but the people have a right to be heard and challenge the establishment.
