On this Memorial Day weekend, we remember those who have fought and died for us.  America began with a war for freedom and many wars have been fought since to protect it.  We would not enjoy this legacy today without the sacrifices of those willing to lose their life in our defense.

What does being a veteran mean?

These men and women are willing to serve and possibly die for us.  They take a vow to defend the country from enemies both foreign and domestic.

The military also pledges to support and defend the Constitution.

That last one is a problem since a large number of people no longer believe in the Constitution.  Freedom and liberty have been under attack since the country was founded because people have always dominated other people and forced them to comply by limiting opportunities.  Power has corrupted our elected representatives, they don’t appreciate a free society not dependent on the whims of bureaucrats.

America is at war with itself – and government caused it.

Illinois Senator Dick Durbin expressed his view of America in an email Friday:

For all the talk on the campaign trail of standing up for the forgotten men and women of this country, the President’s budget takes aim at the exact programs that our nation’s most vulnerable rely on. From healthcare and food stamps to student loans and disability payments, President Trump’s budget is nothing less than an assault on seniors, low-income Americans, children, and the disabled. In a speech on the Senate floor, Sen. Durbin chastised President Trump’s fiscal year 2018 budget request to Congress. President Trump’s budget slashes more than $600 billion in Medicaid funding over the next decade. That’s in addition to the $840 billion in Medicaid funding cuts within Trumpcare – $40 billion being cut from Illinois alone. Altogether, President Trump wishes to cut Medicaid funding by $1.3 trillion over the next decade. In Illinois, three million people depend on Medicaid for health insurance, and Illinois schools received about $150 million in Medicaid funds last year to provide services to students with disabilities. His budget cuts the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) by 25 percent. In Illinois, two million low-income people can afford their groceries thanks to SNAP. President Trump’s budget also cuts $5.8 billion from the Children’s Health Insurance Program (CHIP) over the next decade, including a 20 percent cut next year alone. In Illinois, 50 percent of kids – 1.5 million – depend on Medicaid and CHIP for health insurance. And that’s just the beginning. This budget would have a devastating impact on Americans most in need of a helping hand on everything from healthcare and food to access to quality education and affordable housing. We need a budget that reflects the best of America’s values and keeps the promises that have been made to senior citizens, working families, and future generations—not one that pulls the rug out from under our nation’s most vulnerable.

Durbin proves what side he is on – it’s not the side of the American people.

This Memorial Day, ask a veteran if they signed up to protect a country that has made people dependent on government programs.  Ask them if they would serve again to support a government that has enslaved future generations with debt.

Durbin supports stealing from people with money to give to people who he thinks deserve it.  Durbin supports theft by government so citizens can’t keep what they earn, he knows better how to spend it.  Dick Durbin’s policies are responsible for the hurt that will be felt by people dependent on handouts if the budget is ever balanced.

Handing people what they haven’t earned hurts both sides.  The receiver eventually believes he/she isn’t capable of caring for themselves and therefore never tries, the theft victim is poorer because the fruits of their labors aren’t available to spend as they chose.

It is immoral to steal for any reason.  Durbin is promoting theft since all his gifting must be stolen from somewhere.  He is promoting a system where coveting other people’s things is encouraged: health care is a right, housing is a right, food is a right, etc etc.

Durbin’s theft by government is mandated to make everybody equal – except politicians of course who exempt themselves from government programs and send their kids to private schools.

Is this what veterans served and died for?

Maybe this weekend you should ask one.  Maybe also ask how they feel about constitutionally undeclared wars they are forced to fight.

We are still a country ruled by the Constitution.  The Declaration of Independence is still as relevant today as when it was written.

Americans must choose which America will survive.  Durbin’s version epitomizes Illinois’s government under Democrat control.  Theft of more tax dollars just passed the Senate and will pass the House.  The entire body is acting immoral!  The country will look like Illinois if Durbin’s vision isn’t snuffed out.

There is another course – the one the Founders believed in.  They had poor people too, but they knew government isn’t helping anybody by taking from some to give to others.

As Benjamin Franklin once said, “I am for doing good to the poor, but I differ in opinion of the means. I think the best way of doing good to the poor, is not making them easy in poverty, but leading or driving them out of it.”

And as the Constitution’s author, James Madison, explained, “Charity is no part of the legislative duty of the government.” Leftists would do well to learn that lesson, and quit demanding that every American always vote for the slick politician who promises the most generous benefits.

What path do you choose?

Our active military and our veterans didn’t sign up to protect socialism.  Democrats and big government Republicans won’t volunteer to change their ways.  They must be defeated, they are the domestic enemies.
