If this is a test, I’d give it an “F”. Of course, like the bike lanes, public opinion doesn’t matter unless it agrees with the crown. The Downtown continues to be a failure despite all this extra attention and millions in taxpayer dollars. Meanwhile, people and good paying jobs are leaving Bloomington in droves. Maybe Tari needs to revisit his priorities. This city has lost its collective mind.
Downtown still has some beautiful buildings. Why pylons AND barricades AND yellow tape ? Is that where Lincoln stood when he was nearly run down by a bicyclist while he was thinking about running for mayor ?
I’m a little late to catch on to what is going on here, but from what I understand the city is experimenting with making it harder to drive downtown. That is the absolute wrong thing to do if they are trying to revitalize downtown. People outside of large metropolises will not go to places if the parking is difficult or the traffic is bad.
Hands down agreement this particular stoplight is superfluous. Since the width of traffic lanes will be reduced (done deal – must cater to the BLO-yer-NOse bicyclist PAC), will this afford more space for CT’s lightly-patronized, money-sucking, leviathan buses and improvement of “the second busiest bus destination” on that block instead of them continuing to push for a new, totally unnecessary, multi-million dollar Taj Mahal bus station blocks away from the main downtown destination?
Front Street’s surface looks like the typical potholed, utility repair-patched, worn out moonscaped street found downtown. If the city has all these extra millions of dollars to throw around (or lose) on select pet projects (cough, Mennonite property, cough, TIFs for friends, cough), why not scrape the asphalt off and restore the brick surface?
Also, which forlorn, abandoned building sticks out like a sore thumb? How long will looking the other way on basic commercial code enforcement and public safety go on, COB? Oh I forgot, they’ve moved on to drooling and dithering about the next shiny object – the former State Farm building…
As I look at this pic, I can’t get past what has to be the multiple patching areas of the street that based on the looks, were patched over and over again. What a waste of money! But at least its patched, unlike most streets that have unpatched potholes!
The cones and barricades are temporary but clearly outline what a “road diet” looks like for safe mobility of pedestrians. There will be “bump-outs” on the sidewalks on both sides of the street with a pedestrian inland in the center of the street. One lane of traffic in each direction at that intersection. Main & Center end at Front Street. The stop lights are being removed and replace with stop signs. This configuration is part of the complete street plan. This is how to improve “walk-ability.” Watch for more as the streets are resurfaced.
Whos lunatic idea was this, Tari Renner? Why would you replace stop lights with pedestrian walk signals with stop signs that people will do a bump stop and go on! The change sounds like an accident waiting to happen! And of course another law suit for the city of Bloomington!

The conduit for the stop lights has deteriorated. The cost of repair is prohibitive given the fiscal condition of the City. It was decided not to spend the money necessary to replace the conduit. Instead, the money will be spent on reconfiguring the intersection and the use of stop signs.

It just dawned on me, the Downtown Task Force recommended the use of the green space in front of the Law & Justice Center as a public entertainment venue. Perhaps the change at Front & Main will facilitate walking there from downtown.
