Green Top wasn’t represented

By:  Diane Benjamin

The live video of last night’s Bloomington City Council meeting wasn’t working for much of the meeting, the Council microphones weren’t working for any of it.  The only one that worked was on the podium.

Green Top has to wait until the end of August to find out if their customers will be allowed to open alcohol in the store.  Maybe if the alderman for that Ward had attended the meeting she could have answered questions.  Amelia Buragas was absent.

It is REALLY hard to hear, but I think the Council reversed the decision by the Zoning Board of Appeals against the guy who wanted to add a screened-in porch to the back of his house.  The ZBA has 7 members, only 5 were at the June meeting.  One of the 5 recused himself from voting.  That means only 4 members out of 7 voted to deny the permit.  Until the minutes from last night’s meeting are posted we won’t know for sure.

Video of the entire meeting has been posted.  Since it is really hard to hear what is being said, it’s a waste of time to listen to it.  The entire meeting was unusually short, less than an hour.

  1. I’m sorry, I guess I missed the memo about if your grocery shopping, it is now okay to drink alcohol and drive afterwards?

    1. C’mon Dawson, these are the beautiful people we’re talking about. They would never think of doing such a thing.

  2. No sound at the meeting ? Well at least no one had to put a hand over their microphone.
Is the City Council of Bloomington beginning to implode. Who is responsible for checking the sound system. The first thing that one checks at a meeting is the sound system.

  3. Green Top Grocery will not survive 2018. It’s the worst kept secret in town. They are literally trying anything in an attempt to stay relevant and woo their members to continue paying dues.

    1. Fresh Market had some of its best sales when they announced a liquidation sale. Perhaps Green Top needs to try an inventory liquidation sale to get people in the door. However, even if they go 50% off, will their prices beat any other grocery store? We just can’t afford to pay 4-5 times more what we do now for a gallon of milk. Perhaps if our property taxes, water/sewer/garbage bills, etc. didn’t keep skyrocketing. Maybe all the city employees getting their 3% raises each year can afford to go there.

    2. Whaaat? Their members don’t understand how investment in business works? That it takes time, hard work, and sweat? They can’t bail so soon. That would be a travesty of libturd lunacy. Oh, the humanity! Someone please find them salvation.

  4. WHY would anyone in their right mind pay over $3 for a simple loaf of bread, and so on?
They are out of touch with reality, and even IF a person with a link card walks in there at 25% off, it’s STILL way too much!! They were done from the get-go..

    1. “even IF a person with a link card walks in there at 25% off” What? Are you saying that the parasites eating on the taxpayers dime get a special price break, too? Unbelievable!

      1. Maggie I find your “parasites” comment extremely insulting. I’m disabled and depend on the little bit of help I get from my link card, but don’t you worry hun my disability will take my life long before old age does !

  5. You snap we match, buy one get two!
with link match receive $1.00 to buy local fruits and vegetables for every $1.00 snap you spend up Up to $25.00 per day. Redeemable at Green Top Grocery and the downtown Bloomington Farmers Market. This was posted on a flyer at a food pantry.

  6. Green Top, though it will be buoyed up for a while yet, will likely NOT be around much longer, and yes this drink in the store thing is (to me) a desperate last gasp – it’s more than just prices that keep many people away, though that is a huge factor, and they will NEVER in a million years, “get it”. Now on another subject – WHY would they want to deny a guy a screened in porch on his own house??? The ONLY reason could be that it would encroach on a neighbors property and that person does not want that to happen. These people are just over the edge.
