Just pointing out the obvious: the only other metro areas to lose jobs are both in severely economically depressed areas. Also, while this shows a net loss, the practical job loss is likely far higher. Many of the added jobs are low income, while many of the lost jobs were high income jobs shipped elsewhere by our “Good Neighbor”.
Have no fear. The EDC is working their fingers to the bone to get more minimum wage jobs to our community.
I don’t get it. Illinois has been losing a significant percentage of it’s population. How can it be adding jobs? Is someone cooking the books on these job numbers? Are the people who are leaving only people who have been unemployed for a long time? Lane

The numbers working are down so far there is nowhere to go but up?
Just like the saying “all politics are local”…. all economies are local…. area shifts in employment will vary… Decatur’s population has been shrinking but it added 700 jobs… still the GDP for Decatur and the demand for goods and services most likely went down. An uptick in jobs will result in more support and service jobs in the coming months and years for Decatur (depending of course on the types of jobs and their pay levels). What all this means for Decatur in the near future is questionable. Attracting long term stable jobs and job growth is something that most (if not all) cities in Illinois are finding hard to accomplish. The technological revolution and resulting startups with very smart people are not locating in places like Decatur or Bloomington/Normal. Central Illinois is still run by crony good-old-boy systems that do not welcome change or the new smart innovators who are going to places like Charlotte NC.
Still no discussion or strategy on the economic downward spiral of Bloomington-Normal from our dear leaders. Oh wait, they’re posing for a photo op on DisConnect Transit. More money down the rathole for a bus line that burns fuel and tears up roads to transport a super minuscule minority of the workforce. Maybe Fatso O’Grady and the EDC can try to attract and retain businesses instead of posing for the camera and endorsing the dumpster fire that is our bus system. By the way, word has it that the EDC is spending money on a consultant to search for Hamm’s replacement. Our leaders are incapable of independent thinking and problem-solving.
The leadership here has no vision and no ability to deal with the situation they find themselves in. Photo ops and doubling down on the same old 20th Century “solutions” is all they have. We need the A team and we have the D minus team. These jokers worked out pretty well when nothing of substance needed to be done. But now we need what they don’t have (vision, out-of-the-box thinking and high IQs).
