Lent and Economic Development

By:  Diane Benjamin

Wednesday nights used to be off limits for school and government activities because many people attended church activities.

“We have no government armed with power capable of contending with human passions unbridled by morality and religion. Our Constitution was made only for a moral and religious people. It is wholly inadequate to the government of any other.”

JOHN ADAMS, Signer of the Declaration of Independence; One of Two Signers of the Bill of Rights; Second President of the United States

Yesterday was not only a Wednesday, it was a Wednesday during Lent.  Is my church the only one that holds services?

Obviously the City of Bloomington doesn’t care:

According to WJBC:  http://www.wjbc.com/2019/03/28/citys-new-economic-development-office-seen-to-emphasize-downtown-improve-ties-with-normal/

Economic Development Director Melissa Hon hosted an open house at City Hall Wednesday night.

The story has one problem:

Existing staffers like Hon were reassigned to work in economic development, using $200,000 in seed money saved from reducing subsidies to the Bloomington-Normal Area Convention and Visitors Bureau and BN Advantage.

That $200,000 saved is in the budget for the year starting May 1st.  What money are they operating with until then?  Does “seed money” mean they are giving your money away?  The story doesn’t say.

The budget still hasn’t been passed!

Now we know why religion is immaterial in the eyes of some.  They don’t accept bridles.  (See John Adams statement)

Morals and religion are not two separate things.  If morals aren’t based on religious principles people are free to define there own morals.  Imagine the difference if everyone just believed:   “Thou shalt not Kill” and “Thou shalt not Steal”.

  1. What are Ms. Hon’s qualifications, other than being a government employee loyal to the crown? Has she started and sold a business? Invested in any businesses? Of course not. She’s from government and knows better than all of us what we want. The focus is on Downtown, well now there’s a surprise. I’m sure the meeting was packed with members of the Downtown cabal and Tari’s developer pals. Interesting words from Ms. Hon: “The city Economic Development Department will play a different role than the chamber, then the CVB, than the EDC,” Hon said. What she means to say is: Tari doesn’t get what he wants with these other organizations because it requires the buy-in and support of others, so we created our own department. That way Tari can do whatever he wants without checks-and-balances.

  2. Progressive Communist Democrats already have dispensed with “Thou Shalt Not Kill.” They celebrate killing born and unborn babies. They have also dispensed with ” Thou Shalt Not Steal.” They “STEAL” our money every chance they get. Local and State government are currently on a roll, raising every tax and fee they can think of.

  3. Diane, if one of the major religions allowed women to be priests, you would be a bishop by now.
    You do outstanding work.

  4. So. They don’t accept bridles.

I bet a few will accept bribes. And I have suspicions about one of them
