Columbus Day haters are missing the entire point of the holiday

Excerpts:

Some 60 cities and states have stopped celebrating Columbus Day, in many cases replacing it with Indigenous Peoples Day. There’s no doubt Columbus — and the conquistadors who followed — enslaved and slaughtered on a mass scale. But Columbus didn’t bring cruelty to peaceful, benign peoples. The indigenous people were also cruel to one another.

Iroquois Indians were famous for their practice of torturing enemies to death over a period of days. The Kwakiutl Indians in the Pacific Northwest practiced cannibalism. A mass grave dating to the 14th century, in what is now South Dakota, turned up 500 murdered, dismembered and scalped bodies of men, women and children. Many tribes scalped their victims alive.

Ritual child sacrifice was common among the Mayans, the Aztecs and many other peoples. The Great Pyramid of Tenochtitlan contains the remains of 42 children around age 6 who were murdered to appease the god who made the rains fall. Because the tears of children were required to prime the pump, some of the kids’ fingernails were torn off to make them cry.

The Incas would drug little girls with alcohol and coca leaves, then freeze them, then mummify them. In a spot that today is right across the Mississippi River from St. Louis was a burial site where scores of teen girls were ritually sacrificed. There is a theory that poor people and slaves captured in war were literally fed to rich Aztecs because protein was so scarce. In the 15th century, life was cruel. Columbus didn’t invent cruelty in the Americas.

Columbus paved the way for the world’s first modern democracy, the one we live in today. America (named after another Italian) was a gigantic leap forward for human liberty and the possibilities for human flourishing that go with it. Or would you rather teen girls were still having their heads chopped off so they could be sacrificed to the gods outside St. Louis?

  1. So, since Native Americans didn’t introduce democracy it was A-OK to engage in genocide of those tribes decimating them and stealing their lands. Who ever wrote the above nonsense has a very strange and seriously distorted view of history. The last comment about teenage girls is out and out bizarre and racist.

  2. This is the exact same line of thinking people used to justify their support for the 9/11 attacks on the U.S. Ward Churchill would be proud of you. Get help.

P.S. If you have not figured out Columbus never set foot in North America, then I feel sorry for you and embarrassed for your history teacher.

    1. This is what Columbus did in Hispaniola shortly after his second landing in Hispaniola:
They [Spanish explorers] forced their way into native settlements, slaughtering everyone they found there, including small children, old men, pregnant women, and even women who had just given birth. They hacked them to pieces, slicing open their bellies with their swords as though they were so many sheep herded into a pen. They even laid wagers on whether they could slice a man in two at a stroke, or cut an individual’s head from his body, or disembowel him with a single blow of their axes. They grabbed suckling infants by the feet and, ripping them from their mothers’ breasts, dashed them headlong against the rocks. Others, laughing and joking all the while, threw them over their shoulders, shouting, ‘Wriggle, you little perisher.’The Spanish then brought over 500 into slavery back to Spain.
If you don’t know that history of what the Spanish did in the Bahamas then I feel sorry for you AND embarrassed for YOUR history teacher.

  3. Love that Leftiethink. They attack those of us who proudly honor our Confederate Heritage as “supporting losers”, but think “Indigenous Peoples” (AKA: Savages)–who didn’t win much–are just wonderful.

Remember when James Watt called Indian Reservations a prime example of the “failure of Socialism”? He got that one right.

    Happy Columbus Day!!

  4. Ever notice when a conservative gets mad that people call him/her a racist, they then go do something or say something racist? Or when they think something is not Christian and then they go say or do something not Christian? God bless you!

      1. Or would you rather teen girls were still having their heads chopped off so they could be sacrificed to the gods outside St. Louis?

That statement is bizarre and WRONG. That’s not what “indigenous” people did. Hunters and gatherers had complex societies that were NOT violent and which depended on clan relationships and a close relationship with their land. In the 13th century the Iroquois established the First Nations connecting tribes in the Northeast in a federation.
The Iroquois used diplomacy to avoid war.. The Illini did the same thing. The Illini established complex cities with temple mounts through out the middle of this continent with Cahokia as its capital city. If you want to distort history and post ignorant ridiculous “history” painting indigenous and native people as violent cartoon characters that’s not OK. It’s not history it’s propaganda.

  5. Indigenous peoples should celebrate Columbus – or go back to eating berries and chasing game with bows and arrows.

  6. While there were tribes that were exceptions to this, most Plains and Mississippi Valley Indians were itinerant, transient, nomadic hunters. Legally, historically and anthropologically it is IMPOSSIBLE for such people to “own” land. This White Guilt BS about stealing their “property”–like they owned specific parcels or geographic areas–is ridiculous. Not saying Indians were always treated fairly or honestly, but the idea that European possession of North American real estate is entirely wrong is just silly.

    Happy Columbus Day!

  7. Erasing Columbus Day should be called racist! Columbus sailed here from another country, and entered North America illegally. Thus,by today’s warped liberal standards, Columbus was technically an “undocumented immigrant ” He should be worshiped by the liberals like they now worship the illegals of today!
