See the Pension Problem Here:

Normal has 136 retired employees collecting a pension.  The information below is from OpenTheBooks.com    https://www.openthebooks.com/Pension/TownNormal

At Monday’s Council meeting Karyn Smith asked the Finance Director how much employees contribute.  Police and Fire contribute between 9.8 and 9.9%.  Other employees contribute 4.5%.  All will also receive Social Security.  See the video at 18:45 in previous links to the meeting.

Instead of fixing overly generous benefits at taxpayer expense, Illinois wants to consolidate plans and raise taxes.

  1. Worked for the State of Illinois for nearly thirty years, my monthly check is a little under two grand.
I refused to buy a promotion. Pay to Play, I believe they call it.

  2. HERE’S A SOLUTION TO FUNDING PENSIONS: Increase what the employees contribute! Increase the percentage. Stop asking taxpayers to fund pensions.

    1. They need to convert to something more akin to a 401(k) out in ‘the real world’. It is reasonable to ask taxpayers to contribute, just as private sector employers do. What needs to stop is expecting taxpayers to be an endless font of money.

  3. In answer to your question the other day “what is Mark Peterson up to?” Looks to me like he’s living large collecting a $144,000 a year pension. Remember, he retired at 58 and this til death do us part.

    1. That also doesn’t include what he’s cashing in on with his VP role at a firm this local area has paid a lot of money to. It would not surprise me if he’s making more in “retirement.” Then again, that’s the same as Normal’s ex police chief moving to Missouri and “double-dipping.”

  4. Nice – I get to work till death, to support all these people and more!
Yet – I am the deplorable, racist, homophobe, nut.
In the mean time we face ever increasing taxes in Bloomington and McLean County,
just to have the privilege for working in the community to support
    these retired government “workers”.

Government workers are the new “elite” class,
Goal – let other minions work to support us cause we are smarter than you
and we “care” more than you. So pay up and shut up,”I have a trip to Florida planned”

    1. well, one guy mentioned was a trash collector, and his annual pension is $90K. i don’t fault him or belittle the job, but the system is whackadoo.

  5. These salaries are obscene. And if the do decide to consolidate all pensions into one big account, two things will likely happen: 1.) Each municipality will be TOLD what they must contribute, so the mayor can say, “I have no choice but to raise your taxes by X amount because we MUST send the state this much money.” 2.) It’s just a bigger pile of money for the thieves in Springfield and Chicago to get their hands on

Also, Dave Anderson retired in 1998. So it’s been over 20 years of paying him that much. Just think of how much was contributed into the pension versus what he has been collecting all these years.
