More Grants & Bike Paths

by Vic Connor

I’ve been spending time going thru the latest 5 Year Budget of Normal.

There is an entry for Normal spending about $200,000 for the Route 66 Bike Trail. Since I don’t normally read the Pantagraph I missed the following story.

It’s about the State of Illinois picking up 80% of a $1,000,000 project to extend a bike trail north of Towanda about 2.5 miles  on Highway 29. The McLean County board passed it 15-3 to spend $50,000 of their money (really our money!). Blm/Nml is responsible for $200,000  and it looks like  Normal has planned to spend about $200,000 themselves according to the last two 5 Year budgets.

Here is the most beautiful statement that is made in the above article.

“Several County Board members expressed concerns about spending money for a project that not everyone would use.”

NOT EVERYONE WOULD USE?????  Over 99% of the people in McLean County will NEVER bicycle on that 2.5 mile stretch of the road. If 1% biked on it, that would mean over 1,700 people will be doing it.

I’m curious. Are any of you planning to bike on it?

I’d like to hear your thoughts on this.
