Let’s talk Tari

By:  Diane Benjamin

One of my readers sent the Sheep story to the Council.  Tari responded with this email:

From: Tari Renner <trenner@cityblm.org>
To: Kevin Gerrard <redacted>
Sent: Wednesday, September 23, 2015 6:39 AM
Subject: Re: Fw: [New post] Big crowd, but SHEEP LOSE

Kevin,
You should tell your colleague that, as usual, she has her facts totally wrong.
A 12K salary means you take home 8K, not enough to pay 8.4K in taxes.
Remedial Math maybe necessary?

Tari Renner

Mayor of Bloomington
109 E. Olive
Bloomington, IL 61701
.
Evidently you need some math, maybe you and Joni Painter could go together.  Maybe a tax class would help too.
.
On a salary of 12 thousand a year, based on the IRS tax tables:
  • If you file as Single, Federal tax was $1350 in 2014
  • If you filed as Head of Household, Federal tax was $1203 in 2014
  • For state taxes, you got to deduct $2,125 for each federal exemption AND 5% of your property tax bill – $420.  Let’s pretend you only claim 1 exemption:  12,000 – $2,125 – $420 = $9,455 taxable * 3.75% = $355
  • The City probably withheld FICA and Medicare, but I think you might be over the FICA limit which means a refund when you file your taxes.  That’s another 7.5% of $12,000 = $900

$1350+355+900 = $2,614!

$12,000 – $2,614 means you should be bringing home $9,386.  If you didn’t bring home around $9,000 either the HR City staff is incompetent or YOU requested more money be withheld.

Don’t mess with a retired CPA Tari.

All of this is immaterial for another reason.  You obviously buy into the claim that the $12,000 wasn’t YOURS to begin with.  The reason you don’t bring home $12,000 is because the government steals part of it for the common good.

Sounds like the same reason you gave for stealing ANOTHER 1% from the people on Monday night.  Money earned is immaterial if government needs it!  Sounds just like the State of Illinois under Mike Madigan.

Citizens will always hate taxes, but they accept some if used for a good purpose.  Bloomington throws money away because they can.  The council will always buy into “there is nothing to cut”, therefore tax more.

Are you paying taxes on that free college education for your kids Tari?  Isn’t IWU tuition around $50,000 a year per kid?

  1. I love that Tari STILL reads this bolg and gets so worked up. More proof he’s an immature bully who’s completely incapable of leading ANY.THING.

Since we know he’s reading, I’ll address him here: Who gives a rip about your “mayor’s salary?” You’re damn lucky you get anything. Public *SERVANTS* do not have a right to get rich. Oh…and it’s not like you’re living on a “mayor’s salary” to pay your taxes, Mr Professor. Your “mayor’s salary” is more like fun money. You should just go back to your liberal classroom screeds and not have to worry about what people think about your “mayor’s salary.” You’re a complete embarrassment who’s surrounded by lackeys you’ve chosen to feed your ego. Smirk away professor. Smirk away.

  2. And another thing – this guy continues to use his (cough cough) “work” email – paid for by taxpayers – to send derogatory and personal insults about private citizens who need “remedial math.” Yet another episode of immature short man’s disease fed by an unreasonably large ego.

    1. To be fair, Tari was responding to my email to Ald. Painter wherein I suggested that she take a remedial math class because the errors she made at the last City Council Meeting.

  3. What a petulant reply from Tari. Clearly Diane you are under his skin. I’m sure he knows your background as a CPA. I wonder why he thought he could get away with that response? It’s not like he was giving a quote to the BCL or WJBC.

  4. As per Tari’s reply, “A 12K salary means you take home 8K, not enough to pay 8.4K in taxes. Remedial Math maybe necessary?” Uhh, depends on the tax bracket, uh dude! I mean like really, uh, if they are taking 33% of your earnings that puts you in a pretty high tax bracket which helps to explain why you are so out of touch with the majority of the citizens you are supposed to be looking out for, NOT! With free college tuition for your kids, that 1% is immaterial to you. Not to mention the fact of the non-transparent agenda you are obviously following. Jerk.

      1. Was he using the tax bracket he is in with his IWU salary? I would guess he has a high salary.

I too wonder how many of the council and the budget committee have ever struggled to pay their rent or worried how they were going to cover all their bills. I’m guessing not many.

  5. What is the biggest item most folks buy every once in a while? A vehicle. now if everyone living in the County bought it outside Nrml-Blm, those two ditty’s would loose a lot of income that they most likely would have gotten. Let your checking account speak for you.

      1. While I understand what your saying, my point is to make a large impact on the cities in the biggest way that they will notice fastest. Besides out of town dealers need that business also.

  6. Nice try Dawson Lake, but IF you live in B/N they have you on file, and if you buy a vehicle somewhere else or privately, they STILL send ya a bill-I KNOW! Also, IF Tari gets $12,000 a year, he’s overpaid. NOW, IF he spends $48 a work day of YOUR money on LUNCH, memberships, dues, travel, etc, he makes ANOTHER $12K. Does he declare this?

    1. Townie, if I look at your comment name and you look at mine, we should be able to figure out that one of us does not reside in town. I can not do anything about his lunch, but next election, you could.
