What I don’t understand is why you don’t sell advertising to recover your expenses and maybe even make a profit. Newspapers are not surviving off circulation and home delivery is a thing of the past as they transition to an online format. The Pantagraph is making money hand over fist right now and they are doing it from their internet readership. They have a matrix to determine how many people are reading and thus seeing the ads and they set advertising rates accordingly. You have the same earning potential available to you. Why aren’t you taking advantage of this golden opportunity that lies before you? I thought you were a capitalist.
Asking people to pay for what they want is capitalism. I used to get advertising revenue, not anymore. Story I don’t want to go into.
When the revenue comes from advertisers, then you can only write what they approve, otherwise you lose their money. When the readers pay, then you write what benefits the readers.
Ah, yes–the 1% who do not have a sense of entitlement–who are responsibly paying for services they use rather than expecting a “free lunch.”
