Jeff Jurgens salary doesn’t leave room for merit raises

By: Diane Benjamin

Tim Gleason’s base salary as City Manager was $212,862.84. The 2023 total compensation report is finally posted: https://www.bloomingtonil.gov/home/showpublisheddocument/30290/638487793683670000

A contract for Monday night’s City Council meeting for Jeff Jurgens shows a base salary of $210,000. https://legistarweb-production.s3.amazonaws.com/uploads/attachment/pdf/2570155/Jurgens_CM_Contract.pdf

Gleason had much more experience than Jurgens. Jurgen’s in a lawyer and Gleason isn’t.

Since a national search wasn’t conducted for Gleason’s replacement, is the pay just to make sure nothing changes under new leadership?

BTW, May 1st you can’t use cash any the Coliseum anymore. Was there another theft issue or just trying to avoid one?

  1. These salaries are obscene. They DO NOT EARN $210,000 or $212,000 a year! They are just stealing tax payer dollars because they can. Speaking of stealing, that’s also probably why cash is no longer allowed at the arena. But, that still doesn’t solve the problem of, “under ringing.” You give your friend 4 food items and only charge him for 2 items.

  2. No cash at the coliseum? Color me paranoid if you will but besides potential theft issues it’s partly to help usher in the cashless society and guarantee the banks their cut with credit card charges.

  3. Actually any grad student in public administration from ISU can do this job. Way over-salaried , esp with the premium level benefits.

Bloomington is an easy going jurisdiction with a largely ignorant and malleable city council , which just makes the job even simpler.

Seriously , the salary is nearly that of the Governor – wtf !

  4. This is just ridiculous. He makes almost (yes I looked and know almost is not exact) $100k more than anyone else in the city. What does/will he do to deserve this? Does his JD justify the inflated salary? Maybe I need to go work for the city.

  5. Probably an ESG Agenda 2030 plant – Human Resources comp systems and practices are shady and deceptive in Central Illinois “Top Talent” narratives run thin for MANY top and middle Management positions (all sectors) who literally do nothing but be an actor and “influencer”

Have fun paying for it all
