Although the Tea Party may not be viewed very favorably by many liberals, it’s still surprising to find out that a quarter of Obama supporters may actually view the movement as the biggest terrorist threat facing the nation.

According to a new Rasmussen poll, 26 percent of Obama supporters ranked the Tea Party as a bigger threat than radical Muslims, local militia groups and the Occupy Wall Street movement.

Among all likely voters, the majority of Americans — 51 percent — identify radical Muslims as the biggest terrorist threat. The other half of Americans are divided among the other categories, with 13 percent saying that the Tea Party is the biggest threat to the United States.

However, for those who identify as “strong supporters” of Obama, the numbers are even farther from the average — with just 25 percent saying radical Muslims are the biggest terrorist threat and 31 percent saying that it’s the Tea Party.

But the apparent connection between the Tea Party movement and terrorism is frankly unfounded. Rather than aiming to attack the United States, the members of the movement are generally strongly supportive of the U.S. Constitution.

Among those polled who disapprove of Obama, results show a more predictable overall opinion. A large majority — 75 percent — agree that radical Muslims are the biggest terrorist threat to the U.S., and just 1 percent say the Tea Party is the biggest threat.

The survey of 1,000 likely voters was conducted June 22-23 and has a margin of sampling error of +/- 3 percentage points.
