Yesterday I participated in an event titled “The Diversity of Perspective”. Junior High and High School kids from many different schools are in this group to learn. They meet every Sunday to listen and ask questions of speakers with different views on a given subject. Yesterday’s topic was:
Who are Media?
.
What Should we Expect from Media?
.
I was teamed up with Colleen Reynolds from WJBC. The students asked open-ended question, then both Colleen and I gave our perspective. We contrasted local media with what I do. The kids asked intelligent and thoughtful questions.
These kids are wisely using their time to understand their world, some have participated for years. Congratulations to former Downs Mayor Jeff Schwartz for his work with these scholars. (seated in the middle)
Thanks to Colleen too. I wish the kids were required to submit a report on the event, I’d love to hear more of their thoughts. Because these future leaders are willing to listen and learn, there is hope for the future.
I hear a future event is going to present the differing perspectives of Bloomington Aldermen Black and Lower. Jeff, that one should be video taped and posted on-line! Jeff also mentioned that several years ago the kids looked at Bloomington’s budget. To balance it, the zoo got cut.
Do you think these students could present reports to the city council?
Outstanding! Renner should have these kids on standby for future consulting!
What a wonderful thing to provide an opportunity for critical thinking. Education at the Jr. High School, High School and College level should be promoting this rather than indoctrination. Kudos to the parents who encourage and support their children’s interest.
The boy in the front row is flashing an obscene gesture. Just an FYI.
The program director says he is making a face, nothing more. He wouldn’t tolerate anything else.
I am assuming you are referring to the hand gesture of the young man of Indian decent standing to the left in the front row. This article is about students learning about differing perspectives, possibly including cultural differences. The gesture is more likely to be one of comfort.
