I don’t ever print anything without posting supporting documents – so this is a FIRST.
I’m hearing rumors the football coach, Joe Walters, at Bloomington High School is going to be told TOMORROW to quit praying before football games or get fired.
Evidently the Freedom FROM Religion crowd is trying to re-write the 1st amendment.
I know some readers know more about this situation than I do – please fill in the blanks.
Who is behind this? How many parents and players don’t agree?
If the players are leading the prayers it can not legally be stopped. They have a right to pray if they want.
I’ve seen a high school player get seriously injured during a football game. What does prayer hurt?
If you don’t believe in prayer are you really stupid enough to fight the non-existent entity?

Praying is about the most ridiculous thing in the word. If God is all knowing and oh so powerful, why would he change his plans, that he set in motion ages ago, due to a few high school kids praying?

Hoover, if you were a Christian you’d know prayer isn’t for asking God to change his plans. It’s about thanking Him for your blessings and trusting him.
So the little kids with bone cancer that are praying to him are THANKING him? Ridiculous.

In Texas parents led the Lord’s Prayer in protest. It worked
I believe this may be true. My son played football against Bloomington the last two years. If Bloomington players tried to meet in the middle of the field after the game for voluntary prayer their coaches would stop it. Maybe their coaches personally had no problem with it but maybe a higher administrator did.
My son has played for Bloomington for 4 years and I have never heard of the coaches stopping them from praying, never even heard or seen them try to pray in the middle of the field.
BHS might want to reconsider firing. Check out past story of coach fired because of praying he is now millions of dollars richer due to his civil rights lawsuit he filed against the school.

What’s wrong with praying you ask nothing some people in this freaking country better wake up .if you don’t like it go to another country we founded with God in everything this stands for get over it or get out leave the coach and players alone
I’m an atheist, and I have absolutely no problem with kids, or anyone for that matter, who want to pray. It’s their right, just like it’s any other kid’s right to not pray. Who cares if they pray or not? I’m pretty sure no one is forcing all of them to pray. Oh, I also don’t care if someone wishes me a Merry Christmas. 🙂

Its a slippery slope. Believe or not, there are parents who do not approve of religion, certain religions, etc. The coach or teacher has a certain level of influence over a player or student. If any boy or girl feels uncomfortable or their parents have objections, it causes issues. The coach is perfectly within his rights to pray by himself, same with the students. But if the coach asks players to pray, it can be seen as a violation of the establishment clause. Prayer doesn’t hurt anyone but there are folks who are very familiar with what they practice. Even among Christian denominations there can be objections because a prayer is Catholic, Protestant, Lutheran, Baptist, Methidist, etc. We may never know the full story. If the coach is a teacher, he should be able to stay on as a teacher.
I think a refresher on the first amendment would be a good thing:
“Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof; or abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press; or the right of the people peaceably to assemble, and to petition the Government for a redress of grievances.”
If your promoting God, don’t berate people who are expressing their own opinions or have a different perspective about their faith then you do. I believe in the Freedom of Religon from school and consider myself a Christian. I don’t want to send my son to school and have just anyone spiritually pouring their Religon into my son. Look at all the horrible things done to kids by so-called Christians. Look at the Catholic Priests even. What if that same coach was Muslim. Would you object if he had the students praying to Allah? Your children and you can pray all you want. You don’t live in a country where if you bow your head in prayer or read your Bible, you will be arrested or murdered by the government. That coach can be a great example of Christ, be a good mentor to those kids, pray before the games on his own and the outcome can be just the same. He can show Christ in the way he lives without expressing it in a led prayer before a game. If you want Freedom OF Religion…. You better be prepared to subject your child to other religions too….or better yet put them in Christian school.
If the kids were forced to participate the story would be different. How are schools doing since God has been banned? Notice a downward trend in acceptable behavior?
BHS/Dist. #87 hired Joe Walters as football coach. I doubt if the administration would threaten firing him. Sounds more like a disgruntled parent putting pressure on for whatever reason. He came from a private school where they see the world differently and have different school policies. I personally don’t have a problem with prayer in this way. What I DO have a problem with is when the Raider was taken away all because a couple people were offended and forced the district to cave into such ill-fated social pressure. The Raider has long been our symbol of courage and excellence and should never have been removed!
It gets sticky. was prayer discussed prior to hiring him? What does school policy say about it? I will be interested in seeing how this all turns out.

I know this one thing to be true:
GOD IS ALWAYS GOOD!
And this coach is good. I’m going to pray for him every day because sometimes when faith is strong Satan attacks. So if you read this say a prayer for Joe Walters that his faith will sustain him.
