The email some Bloomington staff didn’t want you to see.

By: Diane Benjamin

Before the Council voted to raise your property taxes, The City Clerk made a reference to an emailed Public Comment. Later in that meeting Alderman Sheila Montney referenced the same email.

I FOIA’d that email. Staff tried to tell me it was exempt from disclosure. It isn’t. They obviously need training in FOIA law.

I contacted the new City lawyer, Chris Spanos. I got the email later that day.

It would have been illegal for them to redact the name of the sender since people who show up for Public Comment are required to give their name. I chose to redact it because the name isn’t important. What is important is what this email says. Every Council person received it, they raised taxes anyway.

This Council not only voted to raise property taxes, they raised water rates, sewer, storm water, and garbage at the following meeting. Socialism works – for government. Not you.

  1. TIME TO DUMP THE TEA INTO THE WATER. WE ALL JUST HAVE TO FIGURE OUT HOW TO DO IT.
HOW SAD THAT IT HAS GOTTEN THIS FAR. ALL VOTERS NEED TO TAKE ACTION THE ONLY WAY IT WILL GET FIXED.

  2. That is one sad email……and it should be an eye opener to the local “elites”! Here is a single mother trying to keep her financial head above water the right way….by working and budgeting….and the irresponsible “elites” keep wasting money on silly things like huge over sized buses and new swimming pools and an underused downtown arena all paid for by raising taxes. This lady should be a poster gal for .trying to do it the right way, instead she’s being squeezed even more. So, eventually she’ll be forced further into the system and the remaining tax payers will have to foot the entire bill. Smart, real smart Bloomington, Illinois!

  3. My heart goes out to this lady and so many others who work so hard just to get by and then bam, a punch in the gut from our government.
While this lady struggles to live within her means, our government continues to say more, more, more. What do we get for their excess, I would argue nothing that benefits this lady and her family along with many others. I doubt that her weekend includes a show at the coliseum.

  4. I understand and agree with the woman’s point of view, but why is she giving $600/month to the church when she can’t even afford groceries? That’s a borderline dangerous practice for someone of her means

    1. She must get paid biweekly. Her checking account went to $1069. after Fridays payday. At that rate she’d be making over $50K a year if it was weekly…..hardly a struggling income.

  5. this has been the reality for many in the area for long time so the so gooder county and city leaders and politicians (who get major raises, salary and benefits and perks can bask in their goodness to working class and low income and “help”
and money funnel charity and NFP $ and give each other awards

Just cause its legal to tax and rob digitally, systematically and procedurally makes it right

McLean County and BN- decades of this

  6. It looks like this is how Klaus Schwab and the WEF are going to take away ownership of homes and land. Keep raising property taxes until people can no longer pay, then the bank or investment company (Blackrock, Vanguard, etc.) owns it and turns it into rental property. The ignorant members of the city council think they will escape this, but once Klaus is done using them to achieve the Marxist goals, they will lose everything, too. After 2020, it’s pretty obvious voting is a waste of time. 2A will be the only way to solve this.

  7. Some people get paid weekly but it is a small percentage. If she is in a job where she receives (pays towards) benefits, that and taxes will eat up a chunk of her pay.

What the Democrat side will say: no money or less money to he church. Sadly, that is probably what will happen. The sad news, these residents continue to vote for the Democrats who promise help but pass harm.

  8. Dave Ramey and all his glory on responsibility in $ wont fix this mess for most real citizens

While elites in leadership and politics locally preach about “money” management

wake up folks – they dont sacrifice anything
