Police Safeguard our “Democracy”?

By: Diane Benjamin

At last night’s Committee of the Whole meeting the Mayor did two more proclamations. One was for National Public Works week, the other was recognizing May as National Law Enforcement Appreciation month.

Note: the police proclamation happened on May 20th when May is more than half over. The local police deserve the entire month! It would have been nice to know long before the 20th!

One line in the proclamation caught my attention:

Of course we are a Republic, not a democracy. Since the City has declared the job of police is to safeguard “democracy”, that applies to elections.

Several years ago an election worker for the Bloomington Election Commission was “helping” people vote on a referendum by pushing buttons for the voter. It happened at the Coliseum.

Mboka’s proclamation last night means: Call 911. That poll worker was a threat to “democracy”. I never heard what happened to the person. It seemed like no one knew what to do. Now you do.

Thank a police officer today for their service. They deserve it.

There is much more to report on this meeting, stay tuned.
