Bloomington Council: The Sullied Six

By: Diane Benjamin

The Bloomington Council meeting was pretty boring except for one item. Sheila Montney pulled approval of a liquor license for Spinnegan’s, LLC from the Consent Agenda. This business is located where Crafted was on Airport Road.

Obviously Montney received information pertaining to this license application that was not considered by the Liquor Commission. Because of the rules preventing discussion of anything not presented at a public hearing, Montney wanted to send this back to the Liquor Commission for further testimony. She was not allowed to say what the problem is except it pertained to the application.

The City Clerk made clear this business is operating under the Crafted liquor license and would not be affected if their own license was delayed a month.

Cody Hendricks didn’t attend the meeting, so 8 council members voted. The vote was 6-2 against sending the license back to the Liquor Commission.

6 members don’t believe in doing it right the first time. Only Sheila Montney and Kent Lee voted yes.

6 think they can revoke the license in the future if some facts become known the Liquor Commission wasn’t aware of.

The Council must love lawsuits. Revoke the license later? The owner will claim the Council spurned extra testimony from the Liquor Commission. Revocation hurts the business; delay doesn’t.

Hearing tests should be administered to Molly Ward, Abby Scott, Jenna Kearns, Michael Mosley, John Danenberger, and Mike Straza. They didn’t hear the business would not be affected by sending it back to the Liquor Commission? From the discussion they can’t hear.

  1. In effect here’s what the council said to Member Montney. Even though you did your homework and found additional information about the license request (as usual), we don’t appreciate you asking questions (as usual). That just confuses us and makes us look like the simpletons that we are.

(Abby Scott) So we will pass this request knowing that there is additional information that should have been considered. Then if something comes up in the future which leads to taking the license away, we’ll deal with it then. A new business will be established with a Sword of Damocles hanging over it but 6 of us will go wallow in the mud, joyous in our power to shut down discussion and thumb our noses at common sense..

In fact they look like fools.

The whole tone of this council is pathetic.

  2. 6 Leftist Progressive Marxists doing what they are told to do. Jam it through no matter what. They are not there to think. They are there to advance the marxist ideology. No thinking allowed.

  3. Ba ha ha ha ha. Imagine thinking Mike Straza is a Marxist. You all just throw that word at everyone you don’t agree with huh
