BNWRD Property Purchase Update

Just to recap, The BNWRD packet for December had three properties listed they were buying.

Two of them had problems.

First: Pin #21-05-154-020

This property was listed on the County website as owned by the City of Bloomington. I finally got an answer from City Attorney, Chris Spanos, yesterday. I would take a screenshot of his response but you probably wouldn’t be able to read it, here’s a copy instead:

Diane,

It appears that the City does not own the property identified by this PIN, and that there is a mistake on the McGIS system. We contacted BNWRD and understand that it will provide you with a copy of the title policy once it is available.  This should address any questions about the chain of ownership.

Sorry it took so long to respond.  Have a nice weekend.

Chris

Next I contacted the Assessor’s office. I received a response late yesterday from Timothy A. Jorczak saying they are looking into it. He will let me know what they find.

Meanwhile, it looks to me like the guy who BNWRD is buying the property from got off without paying property taxes since 2011. That is as far back as the County records go and it is listed as City of Bloomington property wayback that far.

A little birdie told me past government mistakes are never charged to the person who benefited. We will see.

Second: PIN #21-06-278-031

This is the property that was WAY under assessed when compared to the appraisal BNWRD had done and the price BNWRD was paying.

I called the Assessor’s Office earlier in the week and asked them who had the responsibility to assess that PIN number. They told me this guy:

That is the same guy who told me assessing the value of that property wasn’t his job.

I sent him another email 3 days ago, no response.

Copy of that email:

I contacted the Assessor’s office.  They claim you are the assessor for PIN #21-06-278-031.  I’d really like to know why the assessed value is so different from the appraisal BNWRD had done.

Thanks,

Diane Benjamin

I stumbled on these problems just by reading the packet BNWRD sent to me. I started posting them in 2023 so anyone could see them: https://blnnews.com/bnwrd-docs/

Evidently nobody else bothered to read it.

BNWRD told me they would have the titles to all three properties this week and they would send them to me. I haven’t received anything so far.

How many other properties are incorrectly assessed? That would be a nightmare project. Keep in mind, when others pay less than they should, you pay more.
