Public Comment Chaos at Springfield Council Meeting

By: Diane Benjamin

This is the closest I can get to showing what happened yesterday, because the City of Springfield pulled the video.

https://www.wandtv.com/news/illinois/springfield-council-meeting-ends-abruptly-after-clash-between-alderman-former-police-chief/article_e21b6b00-a8f0-430f-99af-9dea8d6d6bd5.html

I know many people who speak during Public Comment believe they deserve an instant response from the Mayor or City Council. This is why that doesn’t happen.

The former police chief made a comment that is no longer available, and an alderman decided to yell at him. When chaos erupted, the mayor abruptly called for adjournment.

I believe the alderman involved, Shawn Gregory, will be up for reelection next year. Voters deserve to see what happened.

The chaos can be heard on the video in the story above, but the actual exchange cannot. If Springfield truly cares about transparency, the entire meeting video will be restored on YouTube. The public deserves to hear and see it.

Public Comment is often more for the public than for a government that already has its own agenda and rarely welcomes other perspectives. It is never a waste of time, even though it may sometimes feel like it.

A reader sent me a video of the entire incident on Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/reel/1586613805970147

  1. WOW. If you live in Springfield Illinois you probably tune in on Tuesday for a good laugh. Marxist Socialist rule the roost. In the video I am sharing that happened a couple of weeks ago, I stated that the Chambers of the Springfield City Council is becoming a dangerous place for citizens and coworkers. https://youtu.be/vH3NorPQ6do?si=fI68Au-66_obcYUx

  2. I am a taxpayer in Springfield Illinois. My taxes actually contributed to your paycheck Alderman! I pay you to be on the clock and act professionally. Which I understand you have a very hard time doing! I am not asking for kindness or charity. You are being paid.

    1. With city alderman like that, it’s no wonder the 19 year olds run the cops. Great example bud!

They demand respect, but refuse to give it to those who protect their homes and neighborhoods.
