McLean County Board doesn’t want to hear from you

by:  Diane Benjamin

Want proof?  See this link to their policy for speaking at Board meetings:  http://www.mcleancountyil.gov/index.aspx?nid=663

  • Get on your  knees and beg permission
  • Hope the County administrator doesn’t “misplace” your request 5 days before the meeting
  • Then hope Matt Sorensen (chairman) doesn’t cut you off because you aren’t worthy to waste their time on

The only employee disclosures on the County website are employees earning over $75,000 – more than 100 of them:  http://www.mcleancountyil.gov/DocumentCenter/View/979

You are supposed to guess what their job is.

You are also supposed to guess how many other employees are at the County.

You are also supposed to guess what Administration spends over $500,000 on.

Pie charts are available for other spending.  You are to assume competent people are spending your money in a fiscally responsible way.

The current County Auditor lied to the citizens when I campaigned for full disclosure of County spending.  She claimed they were working on putting every expenditure on-line (like other counties).  YEARS later transparency at the County is non-existent.

They can not justify tax increases without full disclosure.  So, they will pass increases without any justification, unless you express your desire to spend your own money the way you want.

If the County passes property tax increases, every level of government will feel free to do the same.  The County is testing you – are you mad enough to take them on?  http://www.mcleancountyil.gov/index.aspx?nid=464

  1. Soooo…. open and transparent are dirty words to the arrogant county board. The only people who don’t want to disclose the truth are those with something to hide, because those with nothing to hide have nothing to fear.

  2. Diane,
I’ll be announcing my run for the Ward 8 Alderman seat next week. I hope you won’t mind if I borrow a lot of the information you’ve gathered and published. I believe I can use it to good effect to get to the other side of the Public Comments microphone. I’m quite sure you know that I won’t make very good potted plant material for our illustrious Mayor Transparency. Wishing you the best and hoping the feeling is mutual…. 😉
