The commission you’ve never heard of

by:  Diane Benjamin

It’s the McLean County Regional Planning Commission! http://www.mcplan.org/department/division.php?structureid=14

What do they do?  Make plans for Bloomington, Normal, and McLean County.  Think East-side Bypass, Bike Routes, and now Bring It Bloomington.

According to the MCRPC 2013 financial statements, 46.6% of their funding came from the Illinois Department of Transportation (IDOT).  Who do you think “suggests” what should happen locally?

At Monday’s Council meeting, Bloomington will pony up their share for this year:

Not only is MCRPC planning your future, they will find grant money (your taxes) to fund projects.

The Federal Government hands out tax money to the states.  IDOT funds almost half of the MCRPC.

The State of Illinois has a direct link to control local government through regional planning commissions.

On the way to local government layers of bureaucracy take their cut.

And you thought the people you elected ran the government.  No, the people handing out money do.  Wouldn’t it be easier if taxes didn’t go from us to the State and Federal Government and then some is returned with the rest going to pay bureaucrats?

Maybe our elected officials just aren’t smart enough.  Instead of assuming the State and Feds are smarter, how about getting our own “smarter” people?
