Water problems in Leroy!

By: Diane Benjamin

Start with the last election. No one who ran for office was contested, one Ward had no candidate. The candidate with the most votes only received 131. Fact: You can ignore politics – politics doesn’t ignore you.

Below are the reason for this story:

Water quality is monitored by the Illinois EPA. See this website for Leroy violations: https://water.epa.state.il.us/dww/JSP/Violations.jsp?tinwsys_is_number=717243&tinwsys_st_code=IL

2023 shows 2 violations, 2022 has 1. The recent violations are for high levels of lead, copper, arsenic, and haloacetic acids. See this website for an explanation on the acids: https://waterfilterguru.com/haloacetic-acids-in-water/

Instead of sending FOIA requests to the City of Leroy I FOIA’d the IEPA.

See this notice of violation, it is serious because on page 2 prosecution is threatened if Leroy doesn’t respond. 3 violations are listed starting on page 3:

Water Superintendent Perry Mayer sent this undated response, IEAP received it on July 5th:

The IEPA wants a Compliance Commitment Agreement (CCA). A virtual meeting was scheduled for yesterday. Leroy has 21 days to respond to that meeting and then the IEPA has another 30 days to respond to the CCA Leroy provides.

This email was included in the FOIA. Did the water clear since this incident?

I certainly don’t know everything about what is happening. I’ve been told by two people Leroy had no water a couple weeks ago because the pumps didn’t turn on. Perry Mayer admitted to the IEPA that he failed to sample water when scheduled, he was one day late. (See his response to IEPA above)

Is Perry Mayer the problem?

I’m also told the City is trying to keep all this quiet. I ran into the same thing with the Replex controversy a few years ago. If you can’t get answers from your mayor and council contact the IEPA. Email addresses are above.

  1. Leroy and Normal have 1 thing in common. Elected officials in both municipalities are pumping Atrazine in the water. Atrazine has been found to chemically castrate frogs. Someone needs to test the water in ALL local schools to make sure they aren’t turning our kids gay.

  2. I reside in a near by small town

The issues with answers and true information is isolated to a select few family and friends/buddy system in our town ( same long time group who are terrible to taxpayers or citizens) A lot of hidden or unshared info goes on $$ Especially where water or boil order concerns or water service and quality questions arise – Makes you wonder.

If you have a question they tell you to talk to county who gives you the runaround & tell you to talk to town (staff and leaders) (which cigar cats are not even published ) Going to town meetings is a joke (based on experience) and communication lacks greatly

They don’t even put board names or contacts or township officers or mayor names on their website (saying not to contact them cause of the fact they have jobs or retires and they need their privacy)

What a joke – taxpayers and utility pastors deserve more and better answers and communication path

County does zero – They are not that busy clearly Easy to pass the buck anymore $$

  3. Corrected as word changes on device using – more clarity on comment here..

What a joke – taxpayers and utility payers and new residents deserve more and better answers and communication path

County (every office and contact m) does zero – They are not that busy clearly and Easy too darn pass the buck anymore $$
