McLean County might finally get Public Comment rules right

By: Diane Benjamin

The County Board meeting is Thursday, the Executive Committee meets today and may make changes to what is proposed.

The changes failed to pass in February because of democrat shenanigans: https://blnnews.com/2024/02/14/a-legal-public-comment-policy-isnt-on-the-county-board-agenda-blame-democrats/

See the new policies from the Rules Committee starting on PDF page 4: https://mcleancountyil.gov/ArchiveCenter/ViewFile/Item/10128

Summary:

15 minutes allotted (not enough for a huge county). Time can be extended if a Board member requests it.

Requests to speak can be submitted 24 hours in advance through the on-line registration OR show up 15 minutes in advance of the meeting and register.

Speaking to an agenda item is no longer required.

There are other proposed rule changes, below are a few:

The “others” must mean media and general public since it is stated they can’t record the meeting. Silly policy since neither should be attending.

If a member can’t attend because of unexpected childcare obligations, who is watching the child while the member attends remotely? How does a member concentrate on County business during an emergency or taking care of a child?

(I remember mine creating ways to get me off the phone!)

(a) and (b) are good, the other 2 should be scrapped. They will be abused.
