Breaking City Code: the King and Queens of Bloomington

By: Diane Benjamin

Jenna Kearns violated City Code by claiming she was the only candidate that supports Democrats: https://blnnews.com/2025/03/24/jenna-kearns-violates-city-code-too/

Local elections are nonpartisan because local issues aren’t political. Essential services, which citizens can’t provide themselves, are why local government exists. Elections in Bloomington have taken a nasty turn toward partisan politics because far-left candidates either haven’t read the City Code or have chosen to ignore it. Those responsible for accountability have failed to do their job.

Cody Hendricks was the most visible violator. Almost two months after the election, he is still prancing around, thinking he weathered the controversy.

He didn’t. However, he did create an atmosphere for extreme partisan politics in the next election.

Did you know Abby Scott was endorsed by the Democrat Party? She must have told the person who interviewed her for this story because there isn’t an endorsement on the local Democrat Facebook page: https://illinoiseagle.com/2025/03/28/city-council-candidate-abby-scott-focuses-data-driven-decisions-in-campaign/

Scott must have lied to Ward 9 when she claimed her decisions would be “data-driven”, read the story. She voted last Monday for the Missing Middle Housing plan with scant information on the affect it would have. Luckily common sense kept that plan from passing – for now.

Cody Hendricks did an interview with the same people: https://illinoiseagle.com/2025/03/28/mayoral-candidate-cody-hendricks-calls-for-fresh-ideas-fresh-vision-for-bloomington/

That story has Hendricks as a history teacher and government teacher. He fails to understand the quality of education across the country has declined since the Department of Education was created. Bloomington dodged a huge bullet by not making him mayor.

Laws in the City Code are now immaterial because far-left Democrats running for office ignore them. Enforcing local laws isn’t the job of the City Council; it’s the job of the legal department and administration.

Both have failed the citizens of Bloomington. Two-tiered justice is now the new normal.

You have to abide by local laws, the elected don’t.

Kneel serfs.

  1. I do commend the County Ethics board for holding Elizabeth Johnston accountable for her conduct, now it’s a matter of waiting on out County States Attorney to forward it to the AG for review.
But with lack of enforcement by the Illinois Election Commission at the State Level, claiming, “no jurisdiction”, was what I expected at their first hearing. The Commissions arrogance and hostility towards the complainant is inexcusable. Totally shows their loyalty’s, contempt for voters, disdain for the rule of law, lack of integrity, ethical sliding scale, and shows me that there is no reason for them to exist if they don’t want to enforce the Illinois codes. I wasn’t in Iowa or Missouri for an Illinois election? Pretty sure Springfield is an hour south on I-55. The Illinois State Board of Election has no jurisdiction for a county election, held in an Illinois County. That’s what I was told. “Mind blown!!!”
