Another letter the Pantagraph ignored

Remember the December incident when one of the speakers at a Diversity Project meeting had a concealed carry gun?  Remember the Pantagraph story?  http://www.pantagraph.com/news/state-gun-signs-must-comply-to-be-enforceable/article_d5a4fe35-683c-532a-a50b-79d060b4fce1.html

John Boch, the person in question and the Executive Director of Guns Save Lives, wrote the Pantagraph a letter.  He never received a response from them.

I met John this week at a Guns Save Lives meeting in Peoria.  He told me the story, so I’m printing his letter.  Maybe the Pantagraph can’t handle the truth.

At a recent McLean County Diversity Project event, I noted the simple fact that non-compliant “NO GUNS” signage lacked the force of law on private property.

I remarked that signs in that very building were faulty, and as such, I was carrying to help keep myself and those around me safer. After all, the only thing that stops a bad person with evil in their hearts is a good guy with a gun.

That remark has ignited quite a controversy. Some have demanded my arrest, even though I followed the law to the letter. Responding to inquiries, the Illinois State Police said I was right.

Frankly, calls for my arrest make about as much sense as treating a silly sign as a magic talisman to keep people safe.

What’s next, voodoo dolls and witchcraft to protect our families from violent crime and terrorism?

“NO GUNS” signs are a dinner bell to bad guys, announcing that it’s safe to commit violence inside those posted locations because card-carrying good guys will have left their personal defense tools outside.

A bad guy who is willing to kill or maim to get what he wants will walk right past a sign on a door with impunity, and maybe even amusement.

What’s more, the Illinois Firearms Concealed Carry Act dictates that only a building’s owner may post “NO GUNS” signage, not tenants. That church forfeited the ability to post “NO GUNS” when they were foreclosed upon and the bank took ownership of the property.

  1. Writing a non-pc letter to the bird cage liner is a complete waste of time, unless of course the intention is to be rejected. Then it is a worthwhile endeavor. The editorial staff has drank so much of the socialist/communist kook-aid that they are not likely ever coming back to reality. Actually those folks down at the pant-waste are conspiracy theorists. They think that the opposition is out to get them so they refuse to have a conversation. Their only survival is to be in complete control of the narrative.

  2. So, ignore the *intent* of the law. Got it. What else can I do this with? Open to suggestions. I’m ready to be an anarchist. Will you help us, Diane?

    1. Mr. Boch seems to have been following the letter of the law which makes him a law-abiding citizen, not an anarchist. If the law has a different *intent*, it should be rewritten to express its *true* intent.

  3. Speaking of LAW (and NOT to change the subject) but WHAT’S this crap this evening about a CITY WIDE ban on ALL street parking?? The folks and I were going to go DOWNTOWN, but since you can’t park on the streets -IN FRONT of the restaurant, we stayed home! Guess the same would hold true for UPTOWN-so DON’T go there until the parking ban is lifted. They want you to park in garages or parks! BS!
And back to the subject at hand-John, I’d sit by YOU any day at a public meeting, as I’ll take the armed person ANYDAY over the liberal, sign code ignorant, that’s the rules, soon to be DEAD idiot in a public shooting!

  4. I am liking the articles on Israel’s approach to guns. If you live in a settlement, you can get one. If you live in a high-crime area of Tel Aviv, you can get a gun. If you want one because you like guns, chances are your application will not be approved. Israel has good reason to have an armed populace but they tend to look at earning the right to bear arms rather than being given that right by default. Probably would never work here.

  5. Intent. Intent to me is knowing the true meaning of the message. Some want to play with their intelligence in public. If a sign said “JUMPPING OFF THIS CLIFF IS AGAINST THE LAW”, do people really think because the word JUMPPING is spelled wrong, it won’t hurt them to jump? Intent, ah yes, intent.

  6. I see where the readers of this blog are VERY UNFAMILIAR with sign codes! BOTH UPTOWN and Bloomington have VERY strict sign codes, as does the Federal Government. Such as braille signs on an elevator, etc, have to be a SPECIFIED height from the LEVEL floor, not higher nor lower. Bloomington has a LAW against signs FREE STANDING on the sidewalk-like the LUCCA grill does on a regular basis-unless they get a variance, signs HAVE to be on the CONTIGIOUS property for a business, also they have to be so many feet from the street, unless “grandfathered” or a variance. The NO GUNS signs have a SPECIFIC design and that is to be FOLLOWED! There are MANY illegal signs in these TWO towns, but the city people are ignorant OR have little or no knowledge of the law, and there’s NO MONEY in enforcing it, so they choose NOT to. Now IF you’re illegally parked, and a cop can give you a QUICK $20 ticket that’s $20 the city gets, so THAT’S what they educate cops on, not sign code! Hence the “surprises” To even put up a sign, one needs a permit, which varies from town to town, some towns are a real PAIN, others just want the money and to see plans.
