I personally know 8 people who have fled Illinois in the last 6 weeks. All of them moved to Red States.
Two of them moved to Foley Alabama, just north of Gulf Shores. The Foley City Council just passed the below. See for yourself the difference between living in a Blue State and Red State. Also, Taxes on their brand new $300,000 house are around $1000 a year.
My tax bill is over $3,100 on a house worth probably $100,000.
And you can blame that on the legislature, starting back in the late 70’s early 80’s and how they fund education in this state. It’s ridiculous.
we exited, stage right, six months ago, leaving family, friends and a lifetime of history. sure we miss our people, but without a doubt we landed in a better place. btw, property tax is less than half of il, as are many ancillary expenses, there is no state income tax, and the confusion on which bathroom to use is minimal.
Years ago, the state legislature in Indiana passed a law where property tax could not exceed one percent of the price of your property. In order to change the law, the state must conduct a statewide referendum to raise them. However, up to this point no need. The state is becoming a tax haven for many moving from Illinois because most property taxes are half or less what they are here even if you purchase a more expensive house. Most locations can’t keep pace with the influx of people that are coming. You are already on a waiting list if you want to build and most sellers are getting twenty serious offers a week within 48 hours of a listing. Illinois will never get it.
Yes, and Indiana does not fund schools through property taxes. Illinois was scammed by the legislature and governor when they implememted the lottery.
We’re considering relocating just across the Mississippi river in eastern Iowa. (Sure like their governor.) We’d still be close to our grandbabies.
Rodney Davis voted FOR the political persecution of America loving Patriots with the Dems Capital Hill investigation. He must be primaried immediately.
He earned respect from me for that vote, even though it was a political calculation for his run for the governor’s office.
I know 3 who left this year, and yep all of them to a Red State. I’m not sure how much longer I can last to be honest.
I moved to Indiana 3 years ago. The house that I had in Bloomington IL was about the same value as what I moved into in Columbus IN. My tax bill in Bloomington IL was around $2500. My current tax bill in Indiana is just under $600. Has a bonus, they fix the roads over here in Indiana. In most places over here, we canceled the mask mandates ourselves. We just stopped wearing them.
Illinois, especially the northern part, is a mess people-wise. A lot of Southern Illinois sort of canceled the mask MANDATE crap a long time ago too, but here in BloNo, they still ride their bike alone, in their mask, and walk down the street, alone, in their mask. I am also SURE that far more than maybe 10% of the people in a lot of the stores around here have been shot up, and yet, still about 90% are in their face rag. Decatur is nuts too except in a few isolated pockets. I have truly enjoyed my many forays to the “rural” counties and smaller towns in the southern half of the state this past few months, it’s been VERY refreshing. I hate it here. I have friends who live farther south and they hate to come up here too. People who live in “free” areas really notice the oppression here as well as the zombies who obediently “comply”. What really kills me is I hear people in BloNo saying that they “Think it’s a little too soon” to be “allowing” people to go places without a mask. I truly think they are addicted now to their masks and they also like having Jelly Belly Big Daddy Pritzker dictate to them as to what they can and can not do. It’s a type of mental illness, I’m convinced of it.
I have to admit, I did feel naked without it, but that subsided pretty quick.
If you hate it here so much, why don’t you move? That’s a serious question, I’m not being a smart-ass. I hear so many of my friends say the same exact thing, yet they never, ever move. They just complain incessantly.
“If you hate it here so much, why don’t you move” – Reasons – I have 2 houses, both are needing some repairs, one is in a different county, I would keep that house and rent it out to someone I knew and trusted. I need to get the other one (the one here) a new roof and a couple other things before I sell it, so I can get a good price for it, which I would need to do in order to have the money to up and move. Paying roughly 1/5 of my total yearly income in property taxes makes me quite ill, and that’s only a small part of it. If I was 30-40 years younger and had few or no responsibilities and/or properties, I would have been gone long ago. Or if I was filthy rich and /or could “work from home” (or anywhere there was WiFi or computer access) I would have for sure been gone. Even the concept of a “working from home” type job bores me to NO end though to be honest so that is NOT something I would even consider. I also like a LOT of the people I know in this area, and while I could see them now and then of course it would be a lot different and no skype and zoom etc. are NOT the same. Trust me though, if I won the MegaMillions, the Powerball, the Lotto, or even the Lucky Day, I would be gone VERY quickly, and go to someplace near to where a couple of my other friends have gone. the wild side of me says just go on and do it, but the practical side of me says – not until you have your ducks in a row – in all truth though I am aiming for 2023. For many many people it’s not as easy as “just leave then”, and I am one of them.
Valid reasons, I was just curious. Many of who I spoke of that complain incessantly, have the means to leave, they just won’t…for some strange reason.

Could I have just a tiny bit, like just 100,000? You wouldn’t even miss it, and I’ll go, seriously. PLEASE? (j/k, kind of ) I know what you mean I know some people the same way, they could, fairly easily but won’t. If it was something like just grand kids, which is one of the things I hear, I’d go, you could easily see them fairly often if you lived just a few hours or a short plane ride away.
