Let’s see which local governments can’t live without the 1% Grocery tax

By: Diane Benjamin

Pritzker signed the bill eliminating the 1% grocery tax. Showing the ridiculousness of Illinois, that 1% was collected by the State but went to local governments. He wasn’t working for the little guy by giving away tax money the State never kept.

Pritzker quote for the story below:

Did Pritzker spew dis-information by claiming he is “lifting the burden” on Illinois families?

The law allows local governments to establish their own grocery tax without a referendum or a hearing. They can just put it on the agenda around a holiday when they think nobody is paying attention and quietly pass it. The state version doesn’t go into effect until 2026, let’s see if locals wait until 2026 to collect their new tax.

Normal’s City Manager has already said they can’t live without the 1%, so they will be passing it. Bloomington hasn’t said unless it’s been behind closed doors.

If you are one of the few who will bother to vote for local mayors and council next year, it would be a nice to find out who would vote for the tax and who wouldn’t. Which candidates think government can’t tighten their belts as average citizens get pummeled by inflation and which ones don’t?

Expecting government to live with a little less money while average citizens are living with a LOT less because of inflation speaks volumes about their worldview.

Local governments are thrilled the legislature delayed State action until 2026 so they don’t have to pass anything before next year’s election on April 1st. Obviously scamming voters in Illinois is standard operating procedure.

  1. “Let them eat cake!”, Governor Pritzker.

    But Local governments?
Common sense matters, let’s bring it back.

  2. You never hear talk about the %10 tax on the food you eat at local restaurants
You order $10 in food you have to pay the city $1.00
A dollar just for food to keep you alive
I had a liberal tell me that is a luxury tax because those lower income people can’t afford to eat out well I believe several years ago Illinois approved the spending of food stamps at restaurants
So a prime example of tax without representation long past due to throw the tea into the harbor
Residents of Bloomington normal way past due to clean house of all city leaders and repeal the tax to eat
Get off your buts and go to the polls

  3. I’m shocked that they haven’t already established a grocery tax! Just think about this. They can impose ANY AMOUNT OF GROCERY TAX NOW AT ANYTIME! The skies the limit here. If you think Illinois gas taxes are high just wait!
