We already have high taxes

By: Diane Benjamin

Illinois is already a high tax state. Add another 1% Sales Tax and we might make it to number ONE! The 1% Sales Tax isn’t just a penny – it’s another penny added to all the other pennies you already pay.

From Wallet Hub:

Vote NO on or before April 1st.

      1. Whether we are “allowed” is completely different from its result. Tariffs make things more expensive, look at what happened after the Great Depression and every other time we proposed tariffs.

        1. Michael, you don’t have to look back 100 years to understand tariffs. Maybe you forgot about Trump’s first presidency and the tariffs he imposed then. Those on the left were howling at the moon about his tariffs. I remember the A/Pantagraph published an opinion piece from the Chinese Consulate in Chicago no less, about how terrible things would get. The left was on board with China. What happened? We had one of the best economies in recent history, record employment, minimal inflation. When Biden took office did he cancel all of those tariffs? No.

Then there’s the issue of national security. We can’t supply our needs in steel, aluminum, and medicines because places like China subsidize their industries for the sole purpose of taking market share. If we ever have to go to war with them, I hope pea shooter technology will have improved by then because that’s all we’ll have.

  1. Lets just keep it local I have been paying on a coliseum for 20 years ,tax dollars and we still owe 20 million we had a pool on the west side that needed replaced so what do our local reps do build an $11 million dollar water park, go out to eat you are being taxed 10% just to eat. Taxes on your house are among the highest in the country!
Hell no don’t vote for or pass new tax request!
I have said it before family circumstances beyond my control keep me in this this area but at some point in time I look forward to getting out of this town and state.

  2. Going out to eat is 10.75%, but buying food at the grocery store is no longer taxed. FUnny how that quality of life thing doesn’t work here as going out to eat provides a little bit of relief, a little bit of (they call it) entertainment. Perhaps you’re away from home and need to eat. Well fork out 10.75% or make it 11.75% to eat if the 1% tax goes through.

Besides the fact that IL is taxed to death, the additional 1% adds to the perception that it’s too expensive to go out to eat. Dam, you might as well round it off at 12%. That 12% compared to no tax on grocery store purchases is a big hurt on those retail establishments that have to charge it as it makes it harder for them to raise any prices just to keep up with their ever increasing costs. It’s no wonder that you see so many small businesses check out.

  3. How about the superintendent of District 87 Emailing parents to tell us how to vote! I think that is definitely over stepping their boundaries. The public schools are a complete joke as is. I’ll keep my penny.
