Crime map 2022: Bloomington

The SAFE-T Act went into effect on January 1, 2023. Below is a crime map of Bloomington during the same time period for 2022. Normal is not on this map, they evidently didn’t report crime statistics then the way they are now.

Purple is residential burglary, orange is aggravated assault, black is murders, brown is theft, green is motor vehicle theft, red is arson.

Compare 2022 with the 2025 downtown map:

2025 shows a lot more theft. 2022 shows a lot more aggravated assault.

I wanted to see what the SAFE-T Act did to crime. Other than change the type of crimes committed, total crime didn’t decrease. Theft isn’t shoplifting.

Are criminals just being charged for theft when they used to be charged with residential burglary or aggravated assault?

I have no idea, I just find this interesting. What do you think?

Play with the website, very interesting stuff.

  1. Doesn’t it almost have to be how reported crime is classified? The 2022 map indicates more intrusive, potentially violent, crime then the 2025 map. Down playing the level of crime would have a positive effect on many statistically driven studies. Property value among them. Words matter.

  2. Although no theft icon at the actual location, every taxpayer knows that the City of Bloomington; Town Council; County Board; Connect Transit and their inept Trustees plus BPD are all taking money from taxpayers and there is nothing that can be done. The education system can be included as well.

  3. How sad it’s obvious that criminals in Illinois no longer have any fear of punishment for the crimes that they commit
Our liberal demoncratic leaders should be ashamed unfortunately they won’t be because they believe that the haves, those that get off their behinds and go to work everyday should give it to those that don’t I believe it’s called redistribution of wealth
Fear of committing a crime is the only fix some have advocated chopping off a finger or hand seems pretty brutal but slapping their hands and releasing back into the neighborhood doesn’t appear to be working

  4. They deliberately imported the crime to BN to accelerate the decline. Their plans are working, unfortunately. To them, they are being successful. Their sycophants are so brainwashed they support this destruction.
