Why We Should Abolish the Bloomington Election Commission

By: Diane Benjamin

Unless “Chad” is now a female name, the local League of Women Voters have let men conquer their spaces. Maybe they can’t find enough women to fill roles in the organization. Maybe they should change their name to reflect who they really are.

The League is going to study the two local election authorities. Keep in mind they opposed eliminating the Bloomington Election Commission when it was on the ballot a few years ago. They wanted an election authority to run all elections.

That is the same as putting the DMV in charge. They would be totally unaccountable, just like the DMV. Government offices run by unelected bureaucrats aren’t capable of efficiency.

Early voting at the mall had LONG lines for Bloomington voters last November. County voters didn’t have long waits: https://blnnews.com/2024/11/03/bloomington-election-commission-strikes-again/

The League Press Release:

A study isn’t needed, just facts. The “key stakeholders” are the voters and the taxpayers paying the bills. Neither will be consulted.

County taxpayers are forced to fund this inefficient use of resources. People are paid full time salaries for conducting occasional elections. Elections require adding votes together from two websites if districts overlap the City and County. BEC relocated to a seperate office at additional expense after space ran out at the Government Center. The County Clerk’s office is more than capable of handling elections out of the office they have. That office is accountable because the head is elected. Do Bloomington voters even know who is running the BEC now?

If that isn’t enough reasons to abolish this waste of money, they have an unmonitored ballot drop off box. https://blnnews.com/2024/11/04/if-this-doesnt-prove-why-bec-needs-abolished-nothing-will/

Voting is a sacred right. The Bloomington Election Commission doesn’t treat it as sacred. Voters have no proof that drop box isn’t being stuffed when no one is monitoring the live stream.

What are the odds this study will include any of the above? What are the odds it will again recommend a separate election authority? I predict high.

  1. Oh Krystal. Shamey, shamey on you. Shame on you for using the elitist double speak terminalogy to deceive those folks you so champion to stand up for. The “stakeholders” term has been bastardized well beyond it’s original meaning. Going back stakeholder commonly meant that thosewhou stake out their property lines were the stakeholder. Now, stakeholders include interested parties. So if I wanted to take property away from you Krystal, I would be a stakeholder. Haha, see how that works. Real stakeholders, real people who have skin in the game WILL NOT be consulted. Again, shame on you Krystal. Those downtrodden you profess to represent, well, you are deciving them.

  2. Yes, yes voters know who the commissioners and executive director are, if they are capable of searching on the Internet. It’s not hidden information.

    1. Having to search for it…not known. Not on their home page. More searching. Had to search for who runs the BEC-not a picture-just his name. Why not make the information even more transparent to all? BEC is waste of time and money.

      1. I found it in less than two minutes on the site. Be better at parsing information that’s readily available I guess?

  3. This is where the LWV loses credibility:

“The League has identified key stakeholders and subject matter experts. It will soon conduct
    interviews with those individuals.”

100% they will ONLY interview the same old stale libtards from within their own thought bubble.

The League membership is aging and has no diversity of thought. Harpies and scolds are not the only stakeholders.
