Assessor Questions

By: Diane Benjamin

Equalization Factors are still not available for City of Bloomington, Bloomington Township, Downs, and Old Town: https://mcleancountyil.gov/109/Filing-an-Assessment-Complaint

See if you agree with this statement: https://mcleancountyil.gov/110/Equalization-Adjustment-Process

I don’t!

People move outside of Bloomington and Normal to small towns because the Cost of Living is less. It is less because less government than in either municipality costs less. The housing prices have always reflected that. When did this change?

There are 3 more Public Information Sessions:

Those three sessions are your opportunity to ask questions like the one above.

Also ask about the “printing” error that caused incorrect data to me mailed to homeowners: https://blnnews.com/2025/08/31/assessment-notices-could-be-wrong/

Ask how lots of townships were affected but not all.

Also ask who is paying for mailing corrected information.

Then ask why you won’t be getting a refund when housing prices fall. (They will)

Your assessed value probably increased dramatically again. That does not mean your property taxes are increasing. Each taxing body decides how much money they want from property taxes. Many of those listed on your property tax bill will attempt to take the maximum amount possible. It’s up to you to stop them. Start with the school districts – the rest will claim it’s just few dollars a year. They believe they are entitled to your money. Unless you stand up to them you will be their slave.

  1. Not rocket science here. A printers job is to download two files and make sure there is a match. You either have 100% correct or 0% correct. If the IRS or the Illinois Dept. of Revenue sent out 29,000 letters to taxpayers that had the wrong amount due, persons responsible would be fired on the spot. My guess is that there will be no one responsible at the County and taxpayers will pay.

  2. Can the print on those card propery tax assessment postcards get any smaller??

Texas has counties disputing the CAD process and legality. Not sure where our Illinois politically paid reps and politicians are? Sure they all work in the same circles and tax funded projects.

Innovation and for casting/accounting and taxing unrealized gains can be a deceptive $ grab. At its worst using data points, calculations, business rules and systems that lack integrity and clarity (most likely).

It’s not about “educating” taxpayers like we are always told by leaders. IL Change management and governance seems to have some issues needing addressed.

  3. I almost threw that card away thinking it was junk mail. It looked like a lot of the junk mail flyers I receive.

  4. Maybe the assessors and planners need to get together as according to the “new” plans smart stackable, walkable cities are all the rage suggesting the viability of everything you need is with in walking distance and therefore should be more valuable. That said, there is no way the small towns surrounding B-N should be taxed at the same rate. Oh my, the food deserts! No disConnect Transit! No hospitals! No coliseum! So much hypocrisy in government. The left hand doesn’t even know that the right hand exists let alone what it is doing.

    1. Who else would the check be made out to? It’s the collector of McLean county property taxes. What law would it be violating?

      1. When I write a check for license plates it is to the IL Sec. of State a department. Same with an check to the IL Revenue Service. As far as I know there is no one or department officially named McLean County Collector.
People thought payments written to Paul Powell went to the IL Sec. of State office also.

  5. This is what happens when unqualified, incompetent persons are given a job for which they have no skills. How many people will be fired for this expensive, unnecessary mistake?

  6. Diversity + Equity + Inclusion (aka “DEI”) Equals FAILURE to HOLD PEOPLE ACCOUNTABLE to do their jobs CORRECTLY.

And you are correct that the smaller towns should have less taxes… unless they are in Unit5 area which mandates extra property taxes for all and receives 80% of all our taxes!

  7. Lucky us! They got that “QR” code 😲 n the notices they are all so proud of and excited about we paid for and for (our own exploit). Digital Transformation/Modernization.

    Unreal
