NCHS Violence – Reason for Evacuation?

By: Diane Benjamin

The was sent to parents parents today – it’s also in Spanish:

There have been a number of fights in recent weeks. Did these have anything to do with the evacuation? If I had kids at NCHS they wouldn’t be there anymore.

Your property taxes at work. YouTube thinks kids being violent shouldn’t be viewed by kids:

  1. And on a just as horrible similar topic…. Illinois Schools Under Investigation for Creepy Sex Lessons

The Justice Department has launched investigations into 36 Illinois school districts, probing whether they have smothered students with “sexual orientation” and “gender ideology” teachings without parental consent.

  2. Was this fight at NCHS? Where was the teacher?
I’ve been looking at the data for Unit 5’s discipline problem. They are in the top 20% of the state for the worst racially disproportionate discipline.

Even though they’ve been at the whole SEL/DEI thing for years it doesn’t seem to be working. Looking at the discipline trend since 2018, you can see that discipline problems skyrocketed after the Covid shutdown. Our kids lost the ability to cope with each other, with adults and with school in general. The damage that was done to our kids in such a short amount of time by governor Pritzker and union leader Weingarten is criminal.

    1. What a moronic post. What does a fight happening at the school sometime in the past month have to do with a school receiving a bomb threat today?

And you’re arguing the school doesn’t take safety seriously? The same school that ran an effective evacuation of their school to a nearby church and then held a super organized reunification with parents? They also had a very strong police presence at Eastview as well. They took good care of the kiddos today, if anything being too cautious today by sending them home after the bomb threat.

Also, it’s kinda weird to see so much concern over a single fight in a high school. Can’t wait till you and your ilk show the same concern about school shootings!

        1. Both links are of the same fight. Know how to CHECK your links before you click POST?

Also, maybe next time wait until the real reporters get the truth out before posting idiotic conjecture. The WGLT article spoke with both the district and police- both of whom said the school was evacuated because of a bomb threat. So, the whole premise of your post is wrong and apparently you’re unable to admit that you’re wrong. Good job “reporting” Diane.

You could have given a shoutout to the school for the great evacuation/reunification job they did today, but that wouldn’t fit with your political agenda. Sad.

            1. Again with the insults. The videos are exactly the same- I copied the links and checked.

Spending so much time churning up anger is really unhealthy. Try spending more time with your husband, kids, and grandkids. The real legacy we leave isn’t our political stances and outrage we stir, it’s the relationships we cultivate with family- our direct impact on them will carry on long after we’re gone and it gives us something positive to focus on rather than experiencing continual outrage via every blog post.

                1. Congrats- you fixed it. So, 2 fights in a high school over the course of a year. Earth- shattering news.

What does that have to do with a bomb threat the school dealt with today? Absolutely nothing. It’s sad that you’re trying to take a school dealing with a pretty serious issue- a bomb threat- to try and spin it into something completely unrelated.

Students and staff probably had a stressful day- they dont need you exploiting that. I can tell you’ve probably never dealt with any type of trauma.

My earlier point remains- I think youd be happier if you spent more time facetiming your grandkids than trying to stir up political outrage. They’ll still be around growing and learning long after this blog fades to obscurity. Focus on what really matters.

                    1. That’s your response after a bomb threat was phoned in? What if the threat was real? The Police and school authorities acted with the proper way to ensure everyone’s safety.

You are so against Public education that you make up stories that a fight caused the closure.

You didn’t read the Police report that said it was a bomb threat.

You’re losing credibility. Between this post and the $400,000 budget overspending that you support, you have certainly revealed yourself.

  3. Diane, you’ve always been partisan, but to be fair, early on you did some good investigative work. However, as the months have turned into years, ‘partisan hack’ has become more appropirate. But this piece is beyond that, more like Tucker Carlson on a bad day. Even for you this take is eye-rolling. Not sure who is paying you to write this garbage, but I wish you’d go back to the Diane of old.

    1. You think this behavior in schools is fine? Did any other media report it? I don’t get paid, not even for clicks. Since all the investigations went nowhere, I do what I want now. Thanks for playing

  4. It was a bomb threat Diane, but you turned it into something different, tried to make a connection that wasn’t there. I know you can do better – you once did! Though it appears that horse has left the barn.

    1. @MOJO – the fact is we have major discipline and violence problem in public schools, (The Illinois Principals Association and IARSS both report that post‑pandemic behavioral issues are at their highest levels in decades), absenteeism has spiked, (up 44% since 2019) academic achievement has plummeted (down 30% since 2019) and the cost per student continually rises. (up 50% in a decade). Student enrollment is down 7–8% over the past decade but total staffing is up 20%. All of these things, including the fact that a bomb threat was made on the school, are interrelated. Education in Illinois is in the toilet and if the media continues to ignore this, we might as well flush it.

The mouthpiece media is dominated by the leftist union leaders, and educational organizations that are completely focused on political and ideological issues that tear apart the classroom environment.

Money is also a major focus of the current education leadership. How do we get more of it and how much can we give to our preferred political supporters. As much as they say they support education the results they’ve given us contradict their rhetoric. Students are secondary in the Illinois’ education system and they are suffering.

Thank you Diane for stepping up!

  5. I want to say that I go to NCHS and this is my story. Yesterday morning, I arrived at school and headed into class. I talked with friends, got a water from the vending machine, and started to my first hour class. Before I knew it, we were instructed to start moving to Eastview. It wasn’t a panic, it was calculated and every staff member was incredibly supportive and ushered us to the nearest exits and kept everyone together. Some students were crying and were comforted by their peers and teachers. People asked what was going on, and even though many of the staff and nearly all the students had no clue except for instructions from law enforcement and admin, we were told we were going to Eastview and that there will be more information then.

Within minutes they transported over two thousand students to Eastview. Buses, cars, lines of students, all inside of Eastview Church. We were seated. I had the luxury of leaving the chaos and getting in my car and driving off, as I was closest to the main exit and frankly did not want to deal with the crowd and navigate a danger I know nothing about. That was my choice. It was likely not allowed, it wasn’t a part of the protocol, but as I had the opportunity I decided to take care of my own safety. It wasn’t out of disrespect for the school, or a mistrust in their capabilities, but I made that choice and I know now that it wouldn’t have mattered what I did because either way I would’ve been safe. A little while later, after talking with other students, I decided to drive past East view and the school. I saw police officers blocking all entrances and exits, many of whom were communicating and reassuring parents, teachers, and students. I saw by the front doors of NCHS several police vehicles and officers going into the building. I know now that there was a state bomb squad. They swept the building and within hours they began to release students safely back to their vehicles. School was cancelled, yes, but what no one seems to be covering is one of the most crucial parts of this whole story.

Yesterday was the AP testing. Many of the students had some test to take and the unique schedules that were given to us to accommodate for this testing already complicated the day. As this is testing that is separate from the school, Unit 5 was under strict guidelines. They couldn’t adjust anything without proper channels of communication that was above their control.

The reason school was cancelled is because students and parents were already confused. Their safety was questioned and their schedules were disrupted. By the time the threat was assessed many of the students were scheduled to be taking a test within Eastview, which was currently occupied by two thousand students. The best choice was for them to cancel school so the families could be together while admin coordinated with each other and the police conducted their investigation.

There never should’ve been a bomb threat. Full stop, period. Never. But there was, and when there was NCHS acted in the best interest of the students. The police force(s) did their best work and kept the students safe. I trust they will conduct their investigation properly and I wish you could’ve researched or waited before you posted misinformation and confused people. Poor journalism.

    1. Media reported the threat was called in around 8:00 when few students were in the building since first bell is at 8:30. The also reported buses were routed to Eastview and not the school.

      I call fraud by you.
