We have AI—Grok, ChatGPT, etc. Ask them any question and you will get a far better answer than Google. Ask more than one if you have a complex question. Compare the results; the difference might surprise you.
Many think we now have AGI (Artificial General Intelligence).
AGI is generally understood as AI capable of performing intellectual tasks at or exceeding human levels across diverse domains, learning from experience, and adapting to unfamiliar situations. Ever call for support and know you are talking to a machine? They aren’t perfect yet, but it’s better than talking to someone in a foreign country you can’t understand.
The possibly scary AI comes next—ASI (Artificial Superintelligence).
ASI is expected to operate beyond the boundaries of human cognition, outperforming human abilities across every domain by a wide margin. ASI’s emergence is closely linked to the concept of an intelligence explosion, where an AGI capable of modifying its own algorithms and learning systems could enter a rapid cycle of continuous self-improvement.
This revolution cannot be stopped. It is going to happen regardless of your opinion of data centers. The only question that should be asked is: Who is going to control it? “No data centers” is not a strategy. No, they are not spying on people. They are learning how to solve complex problems and produce data people don’t even know they need.

No incentives should ever be provided to lure development—they don’t need it. Any development must require bringing their own electricity and infrastructure.
Look at who is behind the opposition before believing anything they say. Humans First is touring the country in a fancy bus. They claim to be grassroots. They aren’t.

I find that AI is wrong pretty much all the time. Ask it something you are an expert on and see for yourself. Often times you have to ask it 5-10 clarifying questions to get to the point where it admits it is a failure. Sad that people are being manipulated into believing AI speaks the truth.

Michael – The way you prompt AI is important because it can “hallucinate”. It doesn’t willfully lie YET. It doesn’t willfully give a wrong answer. (that said, Anthropic engineers did some experiments that showed some pretty scary results)
Here is a prompt that reduces the chances of error.
“Accuracy is more important than giving me an answer. Do not guess. If you aren’t sure, say so. For factual claims that could have changed or that are important to the conclusion, verify them using reliable primary sources and cite those sources. Clearly distinguish verified facts, inferences, and uncertainty.”
If there is a high consequence of being wrong you shouldn’t rely on AI alone.
Diane thank you for the positive outlook for AI. It might be wrong sometimes now and undoubtedly there’ll be a huge learning curve but it will be. It is the next “industrial revolution”, we either play or we loose. Leftist communists like Sanders and AOC do not want AI because it could keep us from going bankrupt and destroying ourselves. Pretty much anything those two support is bad for America. AI is coming, I hope it’s American not Chinese….A few basic regulations need to be in place but lets welcome it not fight it.

I’ve never considered you a particularly “good” journalist, but it takes a truly awful one to promote AI. There might be people you disagree with in every movement, that’s the nuance of American politics and any democracy. If you’re trying to say that big-money is going into “No Data Centers” then you’re completely avoiding the facts. The estimated amount is 45 million that is being spent to fight AI. The amount to support and promote it is 1.3 billion. We also have to acknowledge what happens to the communities around data centers. . . You complained for how long about the Bloomington water switch early last year? Look up the water in those communities. You hate taxes, and bills, and fees, and any time the government asks for your money, look up the raises in costs in those communities. Do some fair journalism, Diane. It’s your work, your words, and your responsibility. AI will replace human jobs, pushing people out of the workplace while they still have to pay in to their costs. AI has a huge learning curve, regularly using AI for research for even months has shown huge effects on the brain and its functions. Look that up too.
This is no industrial revolution, or enlightenment. People will lose their comfort, their money, their jobs, their intelligence, and any humanity we have left. We need to stop pretending like it’s a necessity to have something that has just recently been developed. We need to stop acting like not giving the mass public access to AI is some national security threat.

The concern about people losing their jobs to AI is a valid one. The tech overlords who are trying to shove AI down the unwilling throats of the public have no answer for what happens when people en masse lose their jobs and see their skillset forcibly rendered obselete in the age of AI. This has already happened to people I know who work in healthcare in a red state; there will be no one who is immune, should this threat grow big enough. That is not a net positive and should deeply concern us all.
Marc, the concern about people losing their jobs to computers was considered a “valid” one in the 50’s and 60’s and many people argued against them. Did people lose their jobs to computers? Yes rooms full of people on calculators weren’t needed anymore. Did it cause the employment market to tank? No.
There is a counter argument that says AI will cause an innovation explosion and many more jobs will be created than are lost. Exactly what happened after the introduction of the computer.
As of now the job loss predictions are not holding true. But negative news sells like hotcakes.
Actually, this has been heavily talked about. The biggest response, and one that makes the most sense, is nobody works anymore and the government pays ever adult a living salary. The math worked, as the money paid into the government by these companies and the money saved by not having employees, makes it financially possible. That’s the cliff notes version of a much more complex answer anyway..

AI has its good points and bad points. You bring up very valid arguments. Trouble is, the good of AI will be totally prostituted by the creators and powers-that-be. There is plenty of articles and videos elsewhere where the tech oligarchs have laid out their plans that AI will also be used to eventually create a one world government with the techies in total charge. Your money, purchase choices, travel options and their costs will eventually be controlled by the oligarchs. It’s not me or anyone else saying it, it’s them. As anyone with.a brain knows, you can’t trust any corporation or government, no matter their political leanings. They all lie, all the time.

The Patriot Act, NSA surveillance, American citizens can be defined as enemy combatants and lose ALL of their Constitutional rights. Still, the Epstein files are buried. Giselle Maxwell convicted but none of the names of friends in high places have had their names released. One of thousands of examples. Data centers are for more surveilance of the peons, not the elite. I’m not going to trust any part of it for one minute and there is nothing you can say to change my mind.

Done right, Data Centers and AI centers can and are phenomenal for increasing the tax revenues of communities.
But the key here is transparency and accountability of the governmental bodies making decisions, permitting, dealings, public/private partnerships, tax incentives, NDA’s (secretly signed by representatives of the elected and appointed government officials, so the elected parties can say that they didn’t “sign” it, legally”.
Those are the areas I do not trust. Not at all!!!
Every meeting need to be done in full view and publicly accessible. With community involvement, even ability to invest, buy bonds, or shares.
