Thank you!!! Thank you for digging into this story. Don’t give up. You don’t know how happy this makes me to see somebody trying to get to the bottom of this and find the truth!! Is it coincidental that this is happening right before someone has a son that could possibly be playing football next year at normal West? Darren has given his blood sweat and tears to that program. He cares more about these kids than anything and has sacrificed so much time as has his family. They have brought kids to their house and fed them when their parents wouldn’t. They have taken kids on college visits, he has helped so many kids at that school it’s incredible..It breaks my heart to see him be treated this way so thank you again for what you’re doing.
I’ve received more information. It does look like a tiny group of parents wanted him fired and have for a few years. They tried accusing him of racism but that didn’t work. To keep from getting sued, Unit 5 “suggested” the coach resign. Bullies who think their snowflakes should have more play time won. Parents should demand the minutes of the secret meeting below be released!

Parent are the best source to find out what’s really going on with the Normal West football coach. I know the Board of Education held a secret meeting (Executive Session) on December 13th:
Things I’ve heard:
- a parent and two parents of former students want him fired because their kids didn’t get enough playing time
- the coach isn’t a paid position
- the parents are claiming he should be fired because the coach is getting money from the boosters fund, supposedly given to him because he isn’t paid
I need the help of people who know what’s going on. The School Board isn’t going to talk. Minutes of whatever happened at this Executive Session will not be released unless the Board votes to release them.
If the coach did something illegal or unethical he should be terminated. If he didn’t, a few bully parents should not be allowed to make the decision for the Board.

He’s also a teacher at Normal West. When teachers also coach, they do get paid a stipend to do so. It may not be a big increase from their current pay, but they are paid.

There’s no way, none, any teacher would be doing that for free. Now, the questions is, where is the funding coming from?
If it is from athletic boosters, I guess they have the right to bitch and moan about it. But it’s pretty childish if it’s all about playing time. Maybe your kid’s just not that good. What is that teaching their kid(s)? But, that’s a whole other discussion… 🙂
I’ve just about given up on sports from PCSL to the NFL. At one end we have an organization with no culpability asking for taxpayer funded new fields. As a former coach and parent I would recommend looking elsewhere for sports. At the other end we have millionaire ball players disrespecting the nation to have a political voice. There was a story recently of a local coach that left the public schools to coach at a Christian school so it could be faith based. Coaching sports at the amateur level is not just about the game. The local Cardinal football organization seems well run. I have a friend that is a coach and I’m a cheer parent. Not saying it’s perfect but good.
The Pantarag just reported that the NCWest coach has resigned. The comments section was disabled from the start.

Three successful high school coaches (BHS, NCHS, NCWHS) in the area…all in one year. Coaching is hard work, horrible compensation, and extremely demanding. If you want to know what it is like being a punching bag…coach one of the big two (football and basketball).
In a world that has special interests working overtime to divide and separate. Sports are an easy target as the rules by their very nature produce winners and losers at contest, on rosters, and during tryouts.
You cant win as a coach in a society that wants to celebrate/recognize/value everything and everyone – even failure.
If you think the sacrifice a coach makes are overblown talk to their families.
For me competitive sports (Football and Basketball) developed a sense of toughness, discipline, team work, selflessness, and perspective. 99.9% of athletes will end their sport career/season in defeat. 99.9% will learn that there is no substitute for hard work, that failure is an opportunity to grow, and victory is sweetest when earned.
I’m not sure you will get the real story, if there is one. You’re asking for anyone who really knows what’s going on to report, but I doubt anyone REALLY knows what’s happening. Obviously those who do know the details won’t speak. Anything else may just be repeated gossip.
As for the parents who complain that their star isn’t getting playing time, maybe he’s just not that good! Hardly a credible source!
These same parents have known for years how these coaches get paid. Interesting that they didn’t have a problem with it until their kid doesn’t get the playing time they had hoped for (stats don’t lie).
They really don’t. Did you see the last playoff game?
How about the season stats. You should look them up and it will make sense why some played and some sat.
I took a look at the stats. I don’t know if you’re looking at the stats, or just believing what someone is telling you to believe, but the stats are pretty clear. Playing time had nothing to do with this.
There were players that played a lot more with the 1st string and other players that played a lot more with the 2nd string. With that being said, there was no significant difference in playing time between starting players in the same positions for most of the season, up until the playoffs. Those are FACTS. Don’t believe me, look at the stats and the video.
Are you looking at this objectively or do you have your mind made up? Many of the commenters here seem to have their minds made up, so facts don’t matter to them. Are you in that same boat?
I am sure that the school board members, including some with legal backgrounds, looked at these same stats and looked at other “hard evidence” that was compelling. Then they took into account the “bully parents” theory that many of you hold so dear and made a determination on a 15 year successful coach. Something had to be compelling to make a 15 year successful coach resign. We’ve already determined that the stats don’t show that it was playing time. Maybe the answer is “3 bully parents” have more power than the entire school board. How can that make sense to you?
Maybe, just maybe something happened that neither school board, nor the coach could defend. If you really want the truth, and you are open to accepting it, don’t start out being be illogical and picking sides.
The parents behind this didn’t have an issue UNTIL one of the parents son didn’t play in the playoff game at West. Same parent also had MANY issues with his son sharing the quarterback position all season. Funny, said parent didn’t complain and whine to the board until after his son quit. Quit!! During the playoffs. Who does that? It’s parents complaining and whining because they didn’t get their way. Horrible message to send your kids!! Of course when it appears to at least one of those parents that the rules/law doesn’t apply to them of course they throw fit until they get their way. Please answer this… why did the parents (which only one has a child who attends normal west) wait until said child no longer was part of the team before they complained? And why did that parent need his buddies to help him complain when they currently aren’t even apart of a unit 5 high school? I’m guessing the answer is because they are childish adult bullies. By the way, I’ve seen the stats. The starting quarterback in the last 2 play off games was obviously the better quarterback. And that had nothing to do with skin color, or how coaches got paid, just pure factual game stats. Lazy athletes eventually get passed up. Its that simple!
The truth here all lies in the fact that the Unit 5 Board of Edcuation & Adminstration no longer want to be badgered about a coach by 3 parents who were not happy with their child’s position within the team. Yet the only reason these parents have had this platform to speak is because Unit 5 gave it to them and never put them in their place. These said parents have threaten to play the race card, bring in the ACLU, sue the district for discrimination, and many other unwarranted & not achievable threats. However, instead of backing the coach, who was originally set up by 1 of said parents a few years back, and supporting their hired staff member the Unit 5 Board & Admins decided to cower behind the scenes and find a scapegoat, Darren Hess.
The real story here is that Coach Hess is being accused of things and being threatened by both groups(the 3 parents & the Unit 5 Board & Admin) to resign or be fired. The petty justification the district is giving is for paying assistant coaches. Coach Hess went through his school’s Principal & Athletic Director to make sure everything was above board when doing so. Now the district is saying he shouldn’t have listened to the two administrators the Board & Superintendent of hired & authorized to run the school because they don’t have said authority.
The worst part about this entire situation is that it is not only bringing down the name & reputation of Coach Hess, which he has worked tirelessly for over 20 years in this community to build, I believe it also brought down Coach Temples @ NCHS, and might have put other coaches within the district in jeopardy as well.
There is not a coach in Unit 5 that is there for anything but the best for their student athletes. These coaches work long hours for pennies on the hour if that just to better the lives of the young men & women they coach. A varsity football coach usually puts in 30-40 hours extra a week during the season which last 12 weeks at least, both Unit 5 schools this year had seasons lasting 13 weeks. For the few coaches actually paid by district funds it’s only $1,500. Doing the math that comes out to $0.26/hour. How many of you would take time away from your family, friends, life for $0.26/hour?
Maybe people should start looking deeper into what it takes to be a coach? Maybe people should start looking deeper at what Unit 5 is doing to support these coaches? If the district continues to beat down coaches every time a parent complains about Jack or Jane being discriminating against just because their kid didn’t get the playing time they deserve there may not be many coaches left willing to help grow the young men and women in our schools into the respectable people their programs have put into society.

Multiple criminals:
David Lewis – 6 civil cases of him being sued, 2 aggravated battery charge(1 on a school official)
David Cobb – Felony theft, Misdemeanor theft, DIU Drugs, Resisting Arrest, Possession of Drug Paraphernalia, Endangering life/health of someone under 18, Driving on a suspended license twice, and filing a false police report
Check the stats. I am sure that playing time had nothing to do with this situation. Do you really think a few “bully parents” can force the school board into action without something compelling? Many of you people don’t care about the truth. You have already picked a side.
Actually David Lewis is a former disgraced probation officer in Mclean County. He has felony misconduct on his record too. What a hero!

What does that have to do with the school board’s decisions?
It’s interesting that unit 5 is cowing down to these 3 men, of which 2 are felons. 1 has a son coming to West next year and one has a son at West who feels his son didn’t get enough playing time last season. Can’t unit 5 see through this? What are they afraid of? If these men threaten to sue them, let them. Surely they won’t get very far. Stop letting the parents run the show and let the coaches who you hired and trust do their job.

Not likely. that there was enough evidence to get rid of 2 unit 5 coaches. Ask 2 of the 3 dad’s I’m sure they can tell you all about evidence since the court room is like their second home. At least 2 of the 3 dads knew that the coaches were being paid but didn’t have a problem with it until one of the kids didn’t get the playing time that daddy thought he should get. Great life lesson! If things don’t go your way throw someone under the bus to get your way. I feel horrible for this poor kid!!
Its also baffling how one of the felon/parent is allowed to be a speaker to 5th graders in Unit 5. I’ve heard parents have complained to the schools about this but nothing has been done to date. These guys sure do throw alot of rocks considering they live in glass houses. Total FRAUDS!!!

This is when the Unit 5 parents and taxpayers need to stand up and call out bullies. This might be the one time everyone gets a chance to put an end to helicopter parents trying to call the shots. The accusations of racism were unfounded and truly despicable. Once those charges were found to be not only false, but downright stupid, that’s when the coddling of felons should have ended. These morons have made false allegations against good people in an attempt to smear them so little snowflake could get some more playing time. How any sane and rational person couldn’t see this is mind numbing. If the good people don’t put an end to this now once and for all, it merely opens the door for new idiots to make false accusations to advance an agenda. Who’s has to be defended next? The janitor? Special needs teacher? Maybe the guidance counselor?. Yeah, I’m sure they are all racists too. Felons that transition into bullies have no place in this school district and bring nothing to the table. My advice to those fools would be take your pity party somewhere else!!

So if the school board had hard evidence why would they hide said evidence from the people that pay the bills for the district & for the coach? There isn’t any evidence. Just a grey area that the district is using to get these three parents to stop showing up at their office.
Funniest part about the press release that the district sent out is that Coach Hess actually already has his master’s degree and has for some time now. If that doesn’t scream “fake story” & “cover up” then I’m not quite sure what does.
When do the parents that support these programs & coaches get to have their voices heard? Do we get to show up at the doorstep of the Unit 5 Office and demand a sit down with the Superintendent, the District Lawyer, & School Board to be heard? Do we get to have these meetings sealed and not heard? When does the district come forward and do the right thing? When does the district actually listen to the voice of the many instead of hiding behind closed doors and cowering down to the voice of a few disgruntle parents who no longer even have kids in the program?
Hard evidence? There’s enough hard evidence on mcleancounty.gov and in Lafayette, Indiana to keep one of these parents away from any school for the rest of his life. There’s your hard evidence!!
I have no idea if they’re from Chicago or not. The stupidity they have perpetuated makes me think that’s where they should move to. The one parent boasts about 1800 friends on Facebook, many of whom I know. I hope they do the right thing and de-friend him and silence his garbage bully platform. Unit 5 just wants the bullies to go away so they aren’t putting up a fight. You know what else doesn’t make sense? Why did David Lewis wait until his son was no longer a part of the team (Because he quit when he wasn’t getting his way) to complain and why did he need his buddies (Who don’t currently have kids at West) to back him up? These men have known for years how these coaches get paid but until playing time was cut during the playoffs no one had a problem with it. Something else that doesn’t make sense……. why does Unit 5 continue to let David Lewis into their grade schools to do “motivational speaking” and on the football field (especially when he acts so inappropriately towards other players parents) to take pictures when the man has a record a mile long. You are right! None of this makes sense!!!!!! He’s a huge liability who shouldn’t even be allowed on school property.

Nope, that couldn’t be proven because it was a ridiculous claim. Not even sure why they (they meaning the bully parents) tried that. So when that didn’t work they complained about coaches getting paid. And by paid I mean pennies compared to the time and work they put into these young men. These bully parents should be ashamed of themselves but unfortunately I’m pretty sure instead of being ashamed they are proud. Ridiculous!!
Yes the school board and the district office acted on these claims. They wasted the time of each varsity coach at Normal West by bringing these coaches in and interrogating them based on these claims. Then once these claims didn’t work for their agenda the letter came out from one of the parents that ended up getting Coach Hess suspended.
This entire situation is a repeat from the Worthman joke that happened a few years back. The school district & board has once again allowed a few disgruntle parents control the situation based on false & defamatory statements about not just Coach Hess, but the entire football staff at Normal West. In the same process I believe that they have also put pressure on former NCHS Coach Temples which caused his resignation.
If this isn’t the truth then why have a closed door session with only 3 parents allowed in & the public not allowed to hear their accusations against a government paid teacher?
I’ve also heard stories from multiple parents and people around the football team at NW. There is no doubt that 3 parents started this trouble. One of which was the self appointed team photographer. Parents have said he threw childish fits on the sidelines when his son wasn’t playing. Ranting and raving like a crazy person. They feel he was intimidating coaches with his presence there. Now after reading about his criminal history I would be curious how that gets explained by the school board and the administration. Just a thought.
I wasn’t aware the board meetings were recorded. However, I’m hopeful those would be released. I would be more interested in the school board explaining Lewis away. A criminal record like that and he’s a speaker at the schools? That’s awful. I can’t believe too many parents would be in approval of that.
The Open Meetings Act requires Executive Sessions be recorded, that’s the tape we need.
I just hope alot of people turn out for the board meeting and get answers. Is it possible the audio of the meeting would explain the decision of the school board?. I also hope the 3 parents are called into question, as well as how a criminal record like that gets you a position speaking to elementary school students. That might be the biggest question to ask at the meeting. I thought all volunteers were required to submit to a background check?
I’m not sure how with a record that includes assaulting a school official he’s allowed on school property. Sad part he’s not the only one of these 3 parents that has had a physical altercation with a staff member of the district. A few years back when David Cobb didn’t like how his son was being treated in the middle of a JV football game he rushed down to the field and shoved one of the football coaches. That same season he was allowed to confront a few other coaches with accusations of racism & of only being their for their own glory/image. I’m going to go out on a limb here and say there isn’t a high school coach in this area that is volunteering or getting paid little to none to go out there for his “Own glory”. Yet another instance of these want to be thugs trying to control the rhetoric of the situation in their favor. It’s time people stand up to this garbage.
Then people have to show up in masses and demand answers. I would go as far to invite the media to this event and ask for answers as well. There has to be a show of the good people to defend against this nonsense and prevent it in the future. I’m really sickened by these stories and the individuals who did this
When you have a criminal record like that and have no employment, I guess you have alot of time on your hands to cause trouble. I didn’t even know until last week that the player that drew Lewis’s wrath was 14. That should speak volumes about the quality of person being questioned. And he speaks to kids why and for what?. Apparently not anger management decency!
As a former school board member I know for a fact that voice recordings are required for any closed door session for just such reasons as are being discussed here, and that they must be retained and accessible for two years after said board meeting. What transpired at this meeting is now being brought into question by the tax paying body. Since there was no “Official” termination recommendation made at this meeting there should not be anything that is legally protected in these recordings.
The board did not vote to “terminate” anyone at this meeting but instructed the Administration to make the “unofficial” threat of “resign or be terminated” as the head coaching position is an at-will position and the board needs no reason to make the decision to terminate said employee. This makes the minutes and recordings of this meeting subject to public review. The districts attorney will argue otherwise but that is what he is paid to do.
I have witnessed the dedication and example that the coaching staff provides for the young athletes at Normal West. I have seen how far the coaches go to make sure that young athletes have many of the bare necessities of life that are not being properly provided for them. I also know personally how much emphasis the coaches place on education and they show the athletes that football is a valuable part of their life, but it is not the defining aspect of their lives. Most of we parent recognize that the majority of all players will never be professionals and they need to focus on their education and the importance of developing character as well as physical talents.
I will say that I am so proud of the character that the teammates are showing when they are still being supportive of the young man being forced into a situation that he did not ask for, but is instead the victim of a father trying to live his dreams through his son (I would imagine that he was “bullied” into the decision to quit the team, just as the bullying technique was used to threaten the school board).
Coach Hess’s Legacy will be a generation of better men for having been coached by him. Coach Hess has done the honorable thing in resigning in order to not bring any question upon the integrity of the program. We however, as tax paying residents of Unit 5 will show our resolve to stand up for what is right and require the Unit 5 school board members be held accountable for their weakness of character in allowing the entire district to be bullied such people.

Its still stunning that Unit 5 would cave to 3 bully/complaining parents. Especially 2 of 3 who are serious felons. I have read the court case against Lewis and found that to be very troubling. That was obviously bullying and harassment against several women when he had some type of position of authority. His case alone is very similiar to what is showing up on the news almost daily. He shouldnt get a free pass for that behavior ever. Why is he allowed to enter schools and do speaking there?. Who was in charge of vetting him? Questions for the board/administration that the public should have answered. What does he speak about that is so interesting? His life as a bully and felon? I’m very troubled by these individuals smearing a coach, his staff and the district in general. I would encourage the tax payers show up at the meeting next week and get the answers they deserve.
Where does one even begin at when it comes to this story. It’s sad that a hardworking, dedicated coach like Coach Hess is, was even accused and put in the situation that he was by the board so that they could use him as their door mat to clean their feet on, and to make an entitled parent happy.
This isn’t pee wee football any more folks where kids are learning the game, and developing the skills needed to play the game. Playing time is not something that you are just given, but something that you must go out and earn. Most players understand this, as well as their parents. But you always have that one or two parents that think they know more, and that their child deserves more then what is actually true. At this level, and going forward into college and the pros, age, year in school, years playing the game don’t get you anything. What gets you out on the field, is your performance both during practice and game time that you might get. Just ask the Bears this who started a rookie over their veteran.
This year’s squad had an open unproven position to fill at quarterback. Peyton moved on, and the #2 quarterback from last year had some playing time, but also showed that he needed a lot of developing still from last year’s squad. I think everyone from last year’s team knew that he wasn’t a shoe in to be this year’s starter, all but his father. I know that the talk that was going around was who would Coach Hess start the first game of the season with. Mainly because he had 2 ok quarterbacks, but not a great quality quarterback that stuck out. I as well as many others actually liked what he did the first game of the season against state rank Peoria team. He didn’t start either and went with the wildcat offense. Many thought that the wildcat offense was a more productive offense, then when either of the 2 quarterbacks were in. Both quarterbacks had their good points and bad points, but neither stuck out, although the younger quarterback did seem to be the better passer, with a better accuracy, and a strong arm than the older quarterback. They both had issues with reading the defenses and made some bad passing choices. Neither was able to throw into or against the wind really well and being able to hit their target. I think a lot of us that watch the summer workouts, the 7 on 7, and during the games felt that the younger quarterback, was the better of the two quarterbacks if you had to choose between them, all but the father of the older quarterback, he felt and thought that his child was entitled to be the starting quarterback. So instead of helping his son develop his weaknesses and improving and being a team player. He has his son quit, and pouts that his son was being mistreated. Throws his entitlement out there, his skin tone out there, all the wrong message that should have been throw out there. I’m sure that at the college level or the pro level they would have just laugh at him. Face it, it’s ok and it doesn’t say one bad thing about your son just because he was not the starter of a game, he’s still a great young man, with a bright future and still in the learning phase of how to succeed in life. But it does say a lot about you, and who you are, in the way that all of this has been handle.
I think my kid should’ve been a running back, but he never touched the ball on the field once. Why? Because he wasn’t good enough yet too. Maybe that is something that you need to absorb also. Maybe your child was not the best choice to put on the field, maybe he wasn’t good enough yet, and having him quit, he’ll never see the day where he is.
Maybe I should go to the school board and rant and rave because my kid wasn’t a running back and say that he wasn’t because he was white, because he comes from a poorer family, because in my eyes he could do it, even if the coaches didn’t think that he could, and that he was never given a fair shot. But no, I tell my kid to get out there and work harder, prove yourself, and go after what you want. When the coaches think that you are the best one to put on the field, then you will get your chance to be on the field, and if you are never able to get on the field then you’ll know that maybe you weren’t designed physically to be a running back and to pursue another position that you are able to play well enough to get on the field with. Maybe your son just isn’t quarterback material, and you should have focus him in to another position that he could have excelled at. After all he did have less then a 60 percent passing completion, he lead the team in fumbles, he end the year with negative running yards on his 13 carries, and the quality of his play went down each game as the season went on instead of improving. Does this sound like someone who would be a starting quarterback? Does this sound like someone that should have been playing quarterback at all? No, it doesn’t. Heck the freshman, and JV quarterback had just as much talent and skill level, and they were just getting their high school careers started. Your son was never going to get any offers from a college as quarterback recruit, there are just so many more qualified young men out there. Heck, maybe Coach Hess did you and your son a favor, and you owe him a big thank you by not playing him as much towards the end of the season, when it was apparent that he didn’t have the skill level to be a varsity quarterback at the high school level and he just didn’t seem cut out for that position, where he could have moved to a tight end, or maybe a wide receiver, a position that he might have been better suited for. If you had just opened your eyes, and actually been concerned about your son, instead of having your ego stroked you might have seen this. We all know this has nothing to do with your son and his playing time, but more to do with the fact that your ego wasn’t being stroked any longer, so you do what any child does, pouts and blames other for their own wrong doing.
But no, you rather attack a good man and a good program for your own selfishness, and not even think about your son’s teammates and the impact that your actions might have had on them, or your son for the matter. Football is a team sport and not a me sport. If all you’re worry about is you, and how everything reflects on you, then have your son play a sport where a whole team is not affected by your entitlement thinking, and your thought processes. Have your son play a sport and a position that he actually might be good at, and don’t throw blame at the coaches or the program for his lack of success. Skin tone had nothing to do with his playing time, and you should know this. Others with the same skin tone got lots of playing time, some even went both ways, because they had the skills and talent to do so. Like I stated at the beginning of this, this isn’t pee wee football anymore. Skin tone had nothing to do with this, age had nothing to do with this, the coaching staff and their operation had nothing to do with this, your son just wasn’t good enough has everything to do with this. Your ego has everything to do with this. You need to wake up and realize this, as well as the school board, and everyone needs to do the right thing moving forward.
100% accurate right there. Well said and very accurate describing the season and the turmoil this idiot created. I wouldn’t be surprised if he didn’t try this same stunt on the baseball team. I just don’t think he gets it or he cares who gets hurt. As his criminal record seems to show.
I don’t know much about the baseball team but I’m asuumimg if his son is on the team then yes he will attempt to bully that coach as well especially if his son doesn’t get the playing time that his dad thinks he deserves. It will be intersting to see how that season plays out. I don’t usually keep up with the baseball team but it will be worth watching this season. Hope the baseball coaches don’t allow this parent to bully them, the players or the other parents the way he did during football.
