Drag Queens at the Library?

By:  Diane Benjamin

In case you didn’t know, there is an establishment in downtown Bloomington that holds drag queen story hours for kids.  Since they are a private business, they can do whatever they want.  Next weekend is the 2nd Pride Fest.  Last year people told me it was not a kid friendly event

Holding drag queen story hour at either public library is different.

Recently the American Library Association held a conference in Washington DC.

The week-long ALA conference brought well over 21,000 attendees to the nation’s capital and featured workshops with titles such as:

  • “Queerness in comics”;
  • “A Child’s Room to Choose: Encouraging Gender Identity and Expression in School and Public Libraries”;
  • “LGBTQ+ Creators and Characters in Kids, Tween, and Teen Comics”;
  • “Reading the Rainbow: Teaching Kids about Pride and LGBTQ+ History”;
  • “Are You Going to Tell My Parents?: The Minor’s Right to Privacy in the Library”; and
  • “Telling Stories, Expanding Boundaries: Drag Queen Storytimes in Libraries.”

One graphic provided by the ALA Office for Intellectual Freedom noted that one of the five top methods of censorship encountered by librarians is “requiring parental permission to access content.”

Think none of this will ever happen here?

The taxpayers of Bloomington sent one person to this conference:

I don’t know yet if Normal’s library sent anyone.

Consider this a warning to both libraries.  Use of taxpayer money to promote propaganda will not be tolerated.

  1. WHAT? Drag queens for story hour at the library? What next, Nekked Magicians in Miller park? This isn’t acceptable in ANY WAY, SHAPE OR FORM! Where’s JEN when I’M OFFENDED??
    Really hard to believe!

  2. “Consider this a warning to both libraries. Use of taxpayer money to promote propaganda will not be tolerated. ”

    THANK YOU, DIANE! As Conservatives, we need to draw (and ruthlessly enforce) more “lines in the sand”. As much as I hate the Left, I kinda admire their willingness to force issues and never, ever, back down. We can learn from the success of their tactics.

    1. Like EITHER of our councils or mayors will listen to reason? Tari and his man love Koos came out of the closet in Boston . Jen displays the gay pride flag above the US flag. Do you seriously think either councils will listen to what taxpayers have to say? Yeah right, just like they listened to the disconnect opponents. Besides Diane , you are just a right winged nut job blogger.

  3. Who is Bell? I sincerely hope the NPL and the BPL do not inflict this obscenity on the taxpaying citizens AND our children. This is an obomination on our society. I often wonder how people feel who bought into this gay garbage thinking it was only about one thing only to find out now that the real agenda all along is to steal the very souls and innocence of our children.
