Redacted emails – WMDB

By:  Diane Benjamin

If you listened to Tari Renner’s WJBC interview yesterday, you heard him mention “real journalists” not following up on what bloggers report.  WMDB TV was at the council meeting when both Kirk Allen and I spoke.

Yesterday:  https://blnnews.com/2019/10/16/tari-on-wjbc-3/

See these redacted emails received by FOIA.  What is Nora telling the POLICE CHIEF  concerning WMDB?  Maybe – WMDB is asking questions!

Did the police chief answer:  Thanks for the heads up?

Yesterday Scott Miller’s side-kick Katherine Murphy made a comment about journalists.  It was obvious she thinks only trained journalists should be reporting news.  She must not know “trained journalists” are rapidly becoming the most distrusted people in the country.

“Bloggers” wouldn’t exist if the media was doing their job.   Citizens deserve more than government talking points and one local media source with a policy against doing investigations.

Freedom of the Press has been usurped by partisan reporting.  “Trained journalists” can not be trusted to “dig” for the truth.  Bloggers are just filling the void.

  1. I am encouraged when our newly appointed police chief seems to actually be aware of reality in these times. All sources of “news” are welcome in my house but when I actually attend meetings, hear what was said or done and then read or hear a different story ,—Well every day I am glad we do have independent bloggers out there telling the truth or asking questions. Thank you Ms Diane for being there.

  2. “Freedom of the Press has been usurped by partisan reporting. “Trained journalists” can not be trusted to “dig” for the truth. Bloggers are just filling the void.”

I hardly think you are the model of non-partisan reporting. You are an admitted conservative and use the language of conservatives and the alt-right to describe liberals and people you consider not conservative enough. You accused the McLean County GOP of being infiltrated by liberals. You had Cleon Skousin’s screed against communists in your homepage and tried to connect it to liberalism. Skousin was regarded as a nut job, even by Conservatives. Call yourself a journalist. I don’t care. But to say you are an independent voice is gas lighting the reader in practice and definition.

    1. I’m merely reporting what the other media misses. I never claimed to be a journalist or anything but a conservative. I see you are reading though! I also have never said people need to agree with me, they just deserve more than they get from the local media.

      1. So you’re claiming to be a journalist, but you can’t be bothered to proofread, check facts, or write in coherent sentences. “Sorry you don’t have a staff”doesn’t cut it. Someone is paying you to write your illiterate nonsense and post it everyday. Perhaps because your blog has plethora of misinformation, improbable conspiracy theories and is often out and out wrong, they’re not humoring you anymore.

  3. In the most literal definition, anyone who writes for any type of publication can be considered a journalist. The business now is inudated with people that have “no formal training.” Many are better than the people that had formal training. A fair amount of national news people went to school for something else. The whole fairy tale that someone is employed in the business because they were “trained” is total BS. Many in the business are there because of a contact, appearance or something else that had nothing to do with “training”. It’s like most professional opportunities, know the right people and kiss the right backsides and you are in, trained, schooled or not.

  4. Would WMBD provide you with a copy of their original email to the City to “fill in the blanks” so to speak? I can’t see why they wouldn’t – it’s not like they expect a document written to a public entity to be held in secrecy… right?

  5. Sticky Bean is on it with that article. Great read. But, for those of you who don’t want to click on the link, check these quotes from the article. (Same goes to local lamestream media outlets as well, I’m sure.)

“…I hate seeing what we were and what we could be and what we’ve become. It’s just awful…I mean, we could be so much better than what we are… And the buck stops with him (Zucker),” said Davis, who has been with the (CNN) network at least 15 years.

“I haven’t listened to a 9AM call in about 15 years. I just stopped,” he added. “Just, I can’t listen to it. It’s all bullshit. It’s all just a bunch of bullshit. And I wish that wasn’t the case.”

“You learn it in journalism school, we’re supposed to be middle of the road,” Davis continues. “Now it’s just infotainment is all it’s become. There is no true media outlet.”

“Even though we’re totally left leaning … we don’t wanna admit it,” admits Davis.

  6. So the redactions on these emails about WMBD are specifically about police personnel info and therefore confidential? I bet there’s no personnel material in the redacted text. I bet they were discussing what info to release to WMBD, which should be public info. I thought there were only very limited specific subject matter that could be redacted?

  7. Let’s follow the “only trained journalists should report” comment to its logical end. In most cases, how would someone making such a demand determine if someone has been adequately “trained?” Usually, such a person would favor requiring a professional license from….the government. So, let me get this straight. You want me to pay a fee to and get permission from the government in order to report news. That doesn’t sound like a free press to me.
