People who think “Green” is good need facts

Excerpts:

What is a battery?’ I think Nicholas Tesla said it best when he called it an Energy Storage System. That’s an important distinction.

They do not make electricity – they store electricity produced elsewhere, primarily by coal, uranium, natural gas-powered plants, or diesel-fueled generators. So, to say an EV is a zero-emission vehicle is not at all valid.

Also, since forty percent of the electricity generated in the U.S. is from coal-fired plants, it follows that forty percent of the EVs on the road are coal-powered, do you see?

A typical EV battery weighs one thousand pounds, about the size of a travel trunk. It contains twenty-five pounds of lithium, sixty pounds of nickel, 44 pounds of manganese, 30 pounds cobalt, 200 pounds of copper, and 400 pounds of aluminum, steel, and plastic. Inside are over 6,000 individual lithium-ion cells.

It should concern you that all those toxic components come from mining. For instance, to manufacture each EV auto battery, you must process 25,000 pounds of brine for the lithium, 30,000 pounds of ore for the cobalt, 5,000 pounds of ore for the nickel, and 25,000 pounds of ore for copper. All told, you dig up 500,000 pounds of the earth’s crust for just one battery.”

Sixty-eight percent of the world’s cobalt, a significant part of a battery, comes from the Congo. Their mines have no pollution controls, and they employ children who die from handling this toxic material. Should we factor in these diseased kids as part of the cost of driving an electric car?”

I’d like to leave you with these thoughts. California is building the largest battery in the world near San Francisco, and they intend to power it from solar panels and windmills. They claim this is the ultimate in being ‘green,’ but it is not! This construction project is creating an environmental disaster. Let me tell you why.

The main problem with solar arrays is the chemicals needed to process silicate into the silicon used in the panels. To make pure enough silicon requires processing it with hydrochloric acid, sulfuric acid, nitric acid, hydrogen fluoride, trichloroethane, and acetone. In addition, they also need gallium, arsenide, copper-indium-gallium- diselenide, and cadmium-telluride, which also are highly toxic. Silicone dust is a hazard to the workers, and the panels cannot be recycled.

Windmills are the ultimate in embedded costs and environmental destruction. Each weighs 1688 tons (the equivalent of 23 houses) and contains 1300 tons of concrete, 295 tons of steel, 48 tons of iron, 24 tons of fiberglass, and the hard to extract rare earths neodymium, praseodymium, and dysprosium. Each blade weighs 81,000 pounds and will last 15 to 20 years, at which time it must be replaced. We cannot recycle used blades. Sadly, both solar arrays and windmills kill birds, bats, sea life, and migratory insects.

There may be a place for these technologies, but you must look beyond the myth of zero emissions. I predict EVs and windmills will be abandoned once the embedded environmental costs of making and replacing them become apparent. “Going Green” may sound like the Utopian ideal and are easily espoused, catchy buzzwords, but when you look at the hidden and embedded costs realistically with an open mind, you can see that Going Green is more destructive to the Earth’s environment than meets the eye, for sure.

  1. Wow! You really know your science! Perhaps “Mr. Science”- Dr. Fauci could learn a thing or two from you!! Keep up the great work & have a Blessed Day, my friend!

  2. Wind turbines being better for the environment is probably one of the bigger lies told by the “green” movement. Waste of space, money, and aesthetics.

  3. EV’s have “zero pollution” at point of use, not zero pollution from manufacture and eventually disposal of them. The media has conveniently dropped the pertinent phrase, “at point of use.” Once again the left and their devotees provide misinformation by intentionally “missing” some of the information.

  4. All these green costs are a pittance when you consider John Kerry’s whining that maybe Putin didn’t consider the damage he might do to his green cause when he attacked Ukraine. That proves that they WILL sacrifice any country, including America, and pay any cost in money, lives or international stability to pursue their folly of trying to somehow control the earth’s climate.

        1. What do you mean, ‘Almost’, FROMHERE? They ARE destroying America! Our morals, our values, our laws, our liberty, our schools, even our biological sex is being effectively subverted by the left! ‘America is being fundamentally… destroyed’, to twist Obama’s words to the truth.

      1. DUROC,
I understand what you’re saying but my take is different.
Most progressives aren’t stupid, and most of them really believe they are the virtuous ones. They really are trying to save the world.
The difference is they are socially immoral or better said their morality is broken.
By broken morality I mean that they choose to follow only a portion of the social moralities that keep civilizations functioning.
The moralities of Caring, Fairness, Loyalty, Authority, Liberty, Sanctity are the glue that establishes trust between people. – J. Haidt
Progressives somewhere, somehow decided that Caring and Fairness are the only two that count. The glue is gone.
Thus our communities, cities, (Chicago, New York, etc) nation, schools, law enforcement, courts, politics… under their “virtuous” leadership are falling apart.
Progressives absolutely think they are the moral, virtuous ones. Well they are, if you don’t recognize 66% of what it means to be moral. And that’s why they are so dangerous.

Smart people with a broken social morality are the most dangerous animals on the planet.

  5. For one by 2035 all automobile manufacturers are going to only produce Electric Vehicles. Batteries are constantly evolving with longer charging times. In fact some EV’s can charge using a DC fast charge can travel 270 miles on that charge. Most EV vehicles can map charging stations which are popping up. In fact companies like Walmart are in the forefront of building charging stations in their store parking lots.

Solar panels are also evolving with capabilities to store energy and sell that energy back to your electric company. Wind Turbines are also evolving with capabilities to store wind energy when there is no wind.

It’s hilarious that you’re complaining about toxic substances when you don’t believe in science or even in medicine. You have repeatedly written anti-science and anti-medicine screeds on this blog. I don’t believe for a minute that you actually care about anyone in Africa.

And then the big lie. You actually want dirty tar sands piped around ecological sensitive areas in this country. I thought you were concerned about toxic substances. Apparently not. Not only that those tar sands would not generate jobs. Instead the project would require fewer than 2,000 two-year construction jobs and that the number of full-time, permanent jobs would hover around 35 after construction. The majority of Keystone XL oil would have been sent to markets overseas (aided by a 2015 reversal of a ban on crude oil exports)—and could have even led to higher prices at U.S. pumps. So your contention that Biden is increasing amount of oil from Russia is false. Also it would seem that we need to be moving to green energy so were not depended on other countries like Russia for our energy needs.

“Yes. It’s almost as if they are trying to destroy America on purpose and hope nobody notices.”

Gee who called Putin’s invasion of Ukraine “genius”? Trump. Who withheld military aid to Ukraine in order to extort false information from the President of Ukraine? Trump. Who polished Putin’s boots in 2018 in Helsinki? Trump. The only people destroying this country are people who are supporting Trump and those who think that a dictator wannabe should be anywhere near power.

      1. That one is too far gone Diane, only intense deprogramming sort of like they do with crazy cult members would POSSIBLY save him/her/them. Add in some chronic TDS and there is likely no hope at all. I’ll venture this one is also triple vaxxed and yet still clings to their mask as well, and probably thinks Pritzker has done a great job “keeping us safe”.

    1. I’m all for advancements in batteries, solar, wind. We aren’t even close to being where we need to be to power and store energy for our cities, cars, industry. Neither is Russia and neither is China and I doubt they ever intend to. So when Biden starts shutting down gas and oil with no hope for a way to provide the nations needs, making us dependent on others, guess what happens. We’re watching it. – genius.
Oh, and as far as being dependent, solar, batteries and wind will make us more, not less dependent. But then nobody will take advantage of us will they? – genius

“Gee who called Putin’s invasion of Ukraine” – You think that was a smart move by Biden? And what worth was there in spouting off about what Putin would do? Did it make people think Biden is on top of it? No that just reinforced a pathetic picture of weakness.

Biden and Obama have a great track record with Russia advancing into Europe don’t they. The prerequisite for a Putin move into Europe seems to be a democrat administration. Putin’s time line is limited though. Maybe its Xi’s turn now? A little tag team on America.

“Who withheld military aid to Ukraine” military aid was given, not withheld, and a bit more than Obama and Biden for sure.

    2. You need to find other sources for your news so you can get your facts correct. I hope you do.

      1. My comment above was for A Taylor to get their facts straight – just to be clear. I don’t back leftist misinformation.
