The Struggle for Limited Government: Conservatives vs. Progressives

By: Diane Benjamin

The Constitution was written to limit government. The founders believed people can govern themselves.

The fight ever since has been between people who don’t want government running every aspect of their lives and those who do.

Progressives use government to enrich themselves and their friends. That couldn’t be more clear than the local unions demanding Project Labor Agreements to insure government hires their people at the expense of others doing the same work but aren’t union.

Conservatives know competition produces excellence. The perfect example here is public school education. Standardized test scores are dismal. Many parents can’t afford a private education for their kids after paying ridiculous property taxes where most goes to those failing schools. Many states have passed school choice because your zip code shouldn’t dictate your school. Illinois doesn’t want parents to have a choice, progressive teacher unions fund elections. Obviously kids aren’t a priority and the results show.

After the state and local governments declared renters don’t need to pay rent for over a year because of COVID and Bloomington stuck landlords with water bills their tenants didn’t pay, why would anyone want to be a landlord?

It gets worse – now progressives want to control how much landlords can charge:

Progressives don’t understand regulations limit investment. They want rent to stabilize by regulating it. The result will be fewer landlords, decreased maintenance on existing properties and new construction only if heavily subsidized with tax dollars. Progressives NEVER look at the consequences of their actions.

The reasons for the rent increases will not be discussed. No one will mention the landlords who were forced to let swatters use their property without paying. Nobody look at cities like New York that have rent control.

The November election will decide which side runs McLean County. Progressives are the ones attacking freedom, vote accordingly.

  1. This is a classic example why we are getting out of the rental business after 32 years. In 2017 we still owned 12 rental units. We now own two. The main reason is not our age but rather out of control property taxes and out of control insurance premium increases. Did I mention supplies and repair cost increases? Unending regulation as mentioned here has been the nail in the coffin for us. Mom and Pop Landlords like us make up perhaps 60% of all landlords in Illinois. We have looked the other way numerous times when tenants fell on hard times and leave owing us thousands in back rent. Good luck with rent control in Illinois! Right now is THE WORST time in the past 50 years to own property in the State of Illinois! Over priced, over taxed and over regulated! No light at the end of the tunnel with nothing but left wing ideas in control.

  2. LANDLORD SAYING “GOOD BYE, You notice the proposed “rent control” fails to mention “tax control”. Politicians use fear and tax money to buy votes. In four years I have seen a 30% increase in property taxes. Biden is using taxpayer dollars to pay student loans, even after Our Supreme Court ruled to prevent it. Citizens need to read our Tenth Amendment meant to restrict government power.
    Wake up America!!

    1. Very good point. Springfield has no interest in property tax caps, just rent control. FYI. Township property tax multipliers will start coming out in the next couple weeks. Look for another round of HUGE increases in the 10-15% range. No end in sight!

  3. Why is government the answer to everything? Throughout history this mindset has always ended in famine, poverty, tears, and misery.

    1. Chad, I don’t know about Able’s education but if she came through the Illinois system it is more likely than not that she is a Marxist. She sounds like a classical Marxist that is involved in the economic class struggle couched in the quest for power.

I had Claude AI look at the Illinois Culturally Responsive Teaching and Leading Standard in the Illinois Administrative Code. The conclusion we came up with is that Marxism and Neo-Marxism is a strong thread that runs through the many ideologies contained in the standard. Here’s a link to the analysis. https://1drv.ms/b/s!AuG-ccXw6KcTmv5v_ehVWWgUcmYDGw?e=wbOgNk

Our school systems are required to teach this viewpoint discrimination to our children. Some do and some don’t, but if they don’t, they and/or their teachers could be punished by the state.

So, a Marxist worldview is an entirely likely outcome for our kids and then those that want to be our leaders. Able is obviously OK with government taking over all access to housing, which would be the end result of her push here.
