Is Derek Lopez really still in jail?

By: Diane Benjamin

If you didn’t know, the McLean County Sheriff’s office has an app that allows looking up inmates being held: https://mcleancountyil.gov/95/Sheriff

I know it feels like too many accused persons are let loose with no bail, but the app is currently showing 218 inmates. One of them is Lopez even though initial reports said he was released with a notice to appear.

The app information was updated yesterday so this does not appear to a problem of no update:

The County Criminal database hasn’t been updated. It only shows a 2024 Lopez arrest for driving without insurance. That case shows dismissed. No other information is available.

Meanwhile, the Lopez video has made national news on numerous sites. I hear last night Hannity showed it. Since I don’t have cable TV I didn’t see it. It might be on YouTube.

Media reports ISU did fire him as a teacher’s assistant. Social media claims State Farm fired him, no independent confirmation of that. Has Unit 5 fired him from what looks like substitute teaching? No proof of that either.

  1. The video was on the Fox New website late yesterday and in the evening it was the top news story for a while. I suspect the insurance employer transitioned him to external. Not a good public image to have an employee like that especially caught on video. I can’t get over how arrogant he was in the video. I thought he made some vocal reference to Jesus as I recall reading. Something like this is what Jesus would do so I am doing it.

I’d bet he’s out of jail. I have to agree with a comment made on a website yesterday where someone hopes Trump replaces judges and the next Republican that follows continues replacing. That is one big issue in this country. No meaningful accounability for criminal acts by judges. Another commentor said invest in privately owned prisons because we’ll be needing more of them.

    1. It’s not surprising that State Farm would hire this guy at all. A majority of their human resources personnel responsible for hiring are minorities or female themselves. It’s been that way for at least twenty years. The last thing in this day and age is to do a thorough background check to see if tla perspective employer checks the competency or morality boxes. It’s all about getting the proper DEI scores so they don’t get sued. They basically fired the local white guy in their advertising campaign for appearance and minority marketing purposes. They claimed they needed a real actor and that local Jake didn’t have those chops. Like you said, wouldn’t be surprised if he was an external or moved him there after the ISU incident.

      1. What the heck does State Farm commercial have to do with anything? You seem to object to “females” and “minorities”. Apparently a black man shouldn’t be in any commercials much less a State Farm commercial. Spare me your pearl clutching.

        1. Oh, did I offend you stating fact? Have a problem seeing reality in front of your face? SF has never had a problem caving into race and gender baiting and hiring incompetence to achieve its DEI score. By the way, they need to find a new ad agency. Commercials aren’t clever or informative but I’m sure their management thinks they are a laugh riot. Enjoy your next protest on the Consistory lawn.

  2. This arrest happened yesterday. The initial one was by ISU police on 10/17. I’m assuming he just went before a judge today so the McLean.gov site will update tonight.

So my question is…did he do something else yesterday to get arrested?

  3. I’m wondering where Krystal Able is? This is her kind of guy, her kind of issue, her kind of location, her kind of radical action.

Crickets from her and her comrades. Why?????????
