Homelessness shouldn’t be a crime.
Unfortunately, that’s what the Town of Normal – Government has proposed for consideration at their July 20th meeting regarding the Uptown Station Code of Conduct amendment.
I want to be clear on this amendment. The proposed changes are a thinly veiled attempt to criminalize the existence of unhoused community members in public spaces. Definitions and area specific rules within the proposal are poorly defined and allow for enforcement actions to target unhoused community members.
While the text outlaws discrimination solely based on a person’s housing status, the text is clearly designed to allow enforcement actions, under the ruse of accessibility and safety, to target unhoused folks. This is de facto discrimination.
A code of conduct could be written to protect public safety, improve operations, and make the travel experience better. That is something I would obviously support. But this amendment misses the mark and does far more harm than good.
I believe unhoused folks have every right to be in public spaces that you and I have.
There’s a future where homelessness can effectively be zero. Where housing is treated as a human right. Where systems are in place to help people when they need support. Where every person has a place to call home.
The existence of homelessness is a policy failure, not a forgone conclusion. And it’s something that will take every level of government to solve.
Local governments can make building housing easier and provide adequate funding to supportive services that meet local needs. Federal and State policies can assist with affordable housing construction & preservation, increase funding to local governments, and make greater investments in public housing needs.
Achieving functional zero in homelessness won’t be easy. Nor can it happen with one administration, policy, or program. It will take years of work by citizens that believe every person deserves a roof over their head. If Elon Musk can be a trillionaire, we can get everyone a damn home.
So, what can you do? You can actively support (and VOTE for) people that believe housing is a human right and will pursue policies with that belief in mind. Knock on doors, make calls, and donate to those folks. You can contact representatives to share your thoughts on this proposal.
You can also support organizations like the National Alliance to End Homelessness and Housing Action Illinois.
A better world is possible. But that depends on all of us taking action and making change.
Bessler has the Democratic Socialists of America talking points memorized. Housing is NOT a Human Right because you can only get housing by stealing the labor of other people.
Remember the Declaration of Independence? Our rights are endowed by our Creator — not granted by government. Rights that government pretends to give can just as easily be taken away.
Just look at healthcare in Canada. Their socialist system fails to provide timely care, so euthanasia is increasingly offered as the first option. After all, healthcare is cheaper when patients die and no longer need government freebies.
Anything an elected official declares a RIGHT and bills you for was never a right. It’s theft of your property.

Bessler should invite several homeless people to come and live with him. All people who think him should. There, I just solved the homeless problem. JK
You are spot on. All the Socialists could end B-N homelessness by bringing the unhoused under their own roof. But the Socialists want us to provide the housing, not them. And to what end? Are the unhoused entitled to just a small housing unit like the Bridge or are they entitled to a luxury apartment? If housing is a right, doesn’t that right extend globally? Who is supposed to house those in other countries? The U.S.? The virtual signaling is all a means to an end… create chaos so that they can reorganize our society and put it under Communist rule.
Housing is a “right”. Healthcare is a “right”. Education is a “right”. Sounds great! Everything FREE! Who will supply all these “rights”? Let’s get government to do it with taxpayer money. Add to that all kinds of regulations, mandates and taxes and suddenly NO ONE is willing to supply ANY of these “rights” to societies’ freeloaders. At best, the quality will be so low that no one will want any of these services. People who have no “skin” in the game will appreciate nothing. There is not an abundance of people willing to work for nothing all the time. At least that I know of.
Yes, Reagan said it best: A government big enough to give you everything you want is a government big enough to TAKE everything you have!
