Teachers Don’t Have Freedom of Speech in Classrooms!

By: Diane Benjamin

If you don’t understand that concept you didn’t read yesterday’s story word-for-word: https://blnnews.com/2025/10/07/proof-political-propaganda-is-allowed-at-unit-5/

This isn’t a tough thing to understand if you start with the fact kids are classroom captives.

They can’t get up and walk out. They are forced to endure whatever propaganda a teacher wants them exposed to. If communication between parents and kids isn’t great, parents never know what ideology has been shoved in their kids heads.

Matt Chapman isn’t just making a political statement about ICE by wearing the shirt pictured. He’s convincing students that a law enforcement agency has no legitimate purpose. I doubt his ideology stops at ICE.

I bet Chapman never mentions in a classroom ICE wouldn’t be rounding people up if the border hadn’t been open for four years while we were told the border is secure. I bet Chapman never mentions tax dollars were used to FLY illegals into the country. I bet he never discusses why a political party purposely failed to perform their constitutional duty to secure the country’s border.

If sanctuary cities and states didn’t exist ICE’s job wouldn’t be as difficult. Why would any level of government want to protect illegal criminals instead of citizens?

Think Matt Chapman has that discussion with students?

Classrooms should be politically neutral. Students will never know the politics of a great teacher.

Propaganda is obvious when students do know how the teacher votes.

Nothing will change in Unit 5 until parents demand better and bother to vote in local elections. The next school board meeting is a week from today: October 15th.

  1. Fact checks on claims of taxpayer-funded flights
Numerous reports alleging that the government is providing free plane tickets for undocumented immigrants to fly into the country have been debunked.
PolitiFact: In 2024, PolitiFact rated as false a claim that Border Patrol pays for migrants’ flights from border communities and is reimbursed by FEMA. Border Patrol’s role ends upon release, and the agency does not arrange further travel for migrants.
Reuters: In 2021, Reuters fact-checked a social media claim that airlines or taxpayers were funding free flights for African migrants into the U.S.. The article found this to be false, noting the flights in question were paid for by the charity Miles4Migrants using donated miles.
The Washington Post: In 2024, the Washington Post investigated claims that the Biden administration was using taxpayer dollars to fly parolees into the U.S.. The paper determined the claims were false, as participants in the parole program are required to book and pay for their own flights.

  2. The way I see it, the topic at hand is this – A few teachers in Unit 5 (who knows how many) have been brainwashed by an ideology that says America and all republican voters and the president are racists/nazi/MAGA, low information (stupid) people who have no right to ___________ (fill in the blank).

Gender fluidity is to be celebrated (encouraged?) and addressed in all classes in the district. (according to Equity and SEL)

White, Male, Christian, heterosexuals are privileged oppressors all others are helpless.

Law enforcement is the enemy therefore laws can be ignored. Activism is to be encouraged over academics. I could go on.

These teachers believe it is their responsibility to teach students what to think. Unit 5 is fine with that.
Unit 5 is fine with teachers imposing their personal worldview on impressionable students regardless of the beliefs of the parents who are ultimately responsible for their children. This is child abuse and has to stop.

    1. I’ll filling in the blank above – “people who have no right to ____________” – This can range from no right to speak, to no right to live.

This is how these teachers are framing the students and other people they disagree with today. This is why we are where we are today.

  3. Legal or not, unfortunately they do have freedom of speech in the classrooms and have for many years. They say and do whatever they want, curriculum/law/ethics be damned.

    1. @Tanya.
I believe that what they are teaching is an indoctrination into an ideology. Ideology may or may not be equated to a religious belief. I think it is. Certainly if you teach against a religion, for example teaching kids that Christianity is adjacent to White Supremecy or that Christians are unjustly rewarded or is oppressive, you are in essence teach a religious belief.

If you agree with that then you can say that as a public school they are in violation of the Establishment Clause of the First Ammendment. – Teaching religion as truth or promoting religious beliefs is unconstitutional. Therefore teaching that a religion is not true by demonizing or misrepresenting/lying about a particular religioun’s beliefs should be unconstitional too.

  4. “I bet Chapman never mentions in a classroom ICE wouldn’t be rounding people up if the border hadn’t been open for four years while we were told the border is secure”

You know because you are in the Classroom taking notes right? Making so many broad statements without facts is very irresponsible for someone starving for engagement on your page. how about you go get certified so ” you can teach them the correct History ” of america

      1. So it seems like because his beliefs do not align with yours you have some person issue with this guy. That is seriously what is wrong with society now. this cancel culture created because someone get their feelings hurt over something they don’t agree with. how do you know he did not wear those shirts to open discussion for students to engage and interact? why would we not want our students who some will be headed to college as young adults to be free thinkers ? Why wouldn’t teacher teach all of history from both sides and all over instead of half truths that make you feel good and comfortable because it align with just your beliefs ? I just don’t think you or anyone should jump to conclusions and make several articles when you are not in the room to take in the lesson.

          1. Which go back to my very first post? How do you know ? I would assume you are close to the situation to make these big assumptions. These are not small statements you are making towards this person with the chance of being completely wrong. You are basically stating that your word and everything you have written is facts when it is not based on fact at all. This is your opinion and what you think might be going on. So with that being said how can one try to call out someone that is teaching a class for something that is uncertain? when you are in fact posting news and broad statements about someone while having zero clue about who that person is and what actually happens in the classroom. Unless you sat in for observations that we do not know about. These articles need to be fair not slanted based on your own personal beliefs.

  5. Unfortunately when “eu genes” are the slowest swimmers stupidity is the result.

    1. Case and point!! right into insults of someone being stupid etc simply because they dont agree. I guess make this person the smartest person in the world? Actually wild what is being promoted on this page and articles but there is uproar about T shirt ?

  6. So pretty much everything that you say is the gospel? So your word and opinion is above all? seem to me you are not really open to dialogue or anything that can challenge where you stand on politics or anything for that matter. Wish you well but this is backwards thinking at its best.

  7. “Eu Genes? Being the slowest swimmers. Lol. Get it? The slowest swimmers. Pretty funny actually. Learn to appreciate a litte humor. But then again, if you didn’t get it,,,,.

    1. I got it for sure it was corny then and its corny now. he made the joke because he or she can not come up with legit reason as to why students should not know about all history and be allowed to be free thinkers vs being controlled by someone else beliefs.

      1. Keep believing he teaches American Exceptionalism. I guarantee he does believe anything about us is exceptional. I have a long screed he wrote a few years ago. He’s all in on DEI because people of color can’t succeed here. Sure

        1. So it seems that your real issue is that he is telling the students the truth from start to finish about the ” Land of the Free” I guess in History class you can not talk about historical injustices , Slavery and displacement of native american. As long as he is teaching the history ” You” approve of it is fine right ? sound like you need to go into the classroom and give him some pointers? Seem like truth make you very uncomfortable so you mass it by saying ” This teacher is teaching students to hate our country”

            1. He is not leaving out progress made you are just so uncomfortable talking about past history because it is that wicked. Truth need to be told and all bases need to be covered . Facts over feelings students deserve to know the truth.

                1. But somehow no matter how hard people of color work there are some how over 80% of the people in position of power that are white no matter the qualifications. People of color are actually on opposite side where they have to actually work twice is hard to get close to even. There are more white people getting hand outs in America by large percentage than anyone else if you want to talk about working hard and equality.

                  1. The minority has the same opportunities as the majority. We all can get a higher education and we can all work our way to the top and be successful. Every race has people who aren’t successful and every race has people who are. It’s a fact that white people are the majority so it looks like the minority is being overlooked and that is not the case. We have a Latino woman and a Black man on the Supreme Court. Tell us they didn’t have the same opportunities as the rest of us. I know many who have escaped poverty and are very successful. Yes, it can take a lot of work but it can be done. Get off the race bus and do some real research instead of trying to blame one race for causing the ills of another. You might be surprised to find how many ex slaves became very successful in life.

  8. Wow! don’t forget the ICE center in downtown Bloomington, maybe this teacher had a bad fall while ice skating there and he wants revenge so “abolish ice” on the tee shirt. I am just trying to help the school board, superintendent and principal out as I am just guessing that they will never address this issue.
    RIGHT!!!!!

  9. When immigrants first came together as this country was born, they worked hard or they starved, just like the native Americans. There were not these government handouts to incentivize grifters to take advantage of the rest of the people that busted their asses. Check on any country Eugene where the people in power come from skin colors of their native land. No difference. Many of them in power are just as rotten, if not more rotten that those you complain about. Playing the victim and blaming the white man for everything that some folks cannot achieve on their own hard work is something that I have absolutely no sypathy for. None. Not to mention the fact that what used to be mostly white America has been extremely generous with their tax dollars and their own intentions to help others. You and your ilk, more than uniformed are all living in denial of history.

    1. “He is not leaving out progress made you are just so uncomfortable talking about past history because it is that wicked. Truth need to be told and all bases need to be covered . Facts over feelings students deserve to know the truth.”

The author of this clickbait article replied with “I’m uncomfortable with DEI because it tells people of color whites are evil and you don’t have to work hard. Magically everyone is equal”

what does that have to do with what I said?

I also replied and you can act as if it is not a thing that there are several hardworking people who get overlooked for less qualified people. No one is looking for hand at all just seeking the same opportunities that they qualify for and not be overlooked by nepotism and privilege
