It appears assessed property values will be increasing between 5 and 6% again.
Local governments are salivating at the amount of money that will available to them.
They will be setting their Tax Levy soon. That is the amount of money they want to collect in property taxes. ANY amount over what they collected last year will likely mean higher taxes for you since little non-subsidized economic development is occurring.
Rivian is balking at their “fair share”. Unit 5 will compensate for anything Rivian doesn’t pay by billing you. https://www.wglt.org/local-news/2026-08-20/rivians-tax-appeal-remains-a-sticking-point-for-unit-5s-proposed-252m-budget
Of course the State of Illinois isn’t paying their “fair share” to fund schools either.
Don’t fall for the “rate went down”. That is immaterial to the total you pay when the taxable value goes up.
If you don’t show up at meetings to protest, get prepared for oppressive taxes again.

Everyone, appeal your property tax assessment. Save up to thousands annually.
Free seminar to learn how from a professional Realtor coming up on August 29th.

Rivian didn’t pay its fair share for years while receiving property tax exemptions which ended recently.
Another example of why companies are deciding to leave.
This is Ridiculous!
I am still amazed by all of the goobers around here who voted YES to the “1% Tax”
Who are these people that actually voted YES to raise taxes?
My vote is ALWAYS a NO when it comes to raising taxes!!!
We are ALL being taxed into poverty
Add to the 1% the 12% tax you have to pay just to eat a meal out. I agree goobers voting to increase taxes that is being polite but what do we call the other 75% that don’t vote in local elections? Sad to say but Bloomington normal is done as far as homeowners enjoying any quality of life all we can hope for is getting the heck out of this hell hole!
Well shucks.
When a community holds a corporations “feet to the fire”, it can have huge rewards.

Rivian needs to PAY!!
Period. They’ve benefited from our communities tax free status, our states tax free, free money, practically a free factory full of scrap that gave Rivian at least $1 million is cash that I know of. Well the faucets getting turned off.
I don’t even go down the road in front of Rivian anymore, because the stupid red lights just intermittently stop highway traffic, for literally ZERO, no vehicles exiting the plant, it’s just stupid. Dumb, I watched a rock loaded semi, lock up because of this. Spilled rocks everywhere. For nothing.
Not to mention all the construction at Wylie and College, literally pull up and no right turn onto College. Was there any signs? Nope, it was open the day before but just closed and taped off, forcing a left. Ok, fine, get to Rivian drive, trying to turn Right to hit W Rabb…NOPE closed AGAIN. I actually drove this again, to look for ANY signs, Nope. Just closed, taped off.
Another try, heading north on Rivian if you turned right onto College, left on White Oak, right on Ropp, and Right on Rabb, or College and Rivian, that forced untold loops back to Farm and Fleet because the Contractors couldn’t put up “Road Closed” or “No through Traffic”, maybe “No left or no right turn ahead”. Causing either a U-turn down or 10 minute trip around, South Rt.150 back to Rt 9/W. Market again. Taking the Interstate or Market into town and maybe try White Oak Rd. Forget trying to cut across through off W. Market and turn left near Culver’s onto Martin Luther King Dr.
The City didn’t care, I called and asked if the engineers could get some signage. NOTA.
So anyway, Rivians a short-term business anyway. Unless they and other all electric figure out that current lithium battery storage is a major closed door to the car market. The Hydrogen/electric and next generation/Battery is the future.
Afghanistan’s lithium mining is only about 4 years worth, and Rivians poor profit and customer satisfaction hasn’t budged, nor is their CEO’s charisma able to help that sub-par production and quality issue going to weather the storm of technological innovation when their diversification into a so-called “bicycle” flooded by a Chinese influx.
The uninformed will never hold he Springfield majority responsible for ever increasing property taxes. I do have one tip to share: If you had recent storm damage, especially if insurance refuses to cover the damage, them I suggest going to the county assessors office and fill out a “property destruction” form for a tax reduction. Example might be a finished basement that got flooded and insurance does not reimburse. Worth a try. It could get you a reduction in the next tax cycle.
